Summary from yesterday's message by our Senior Pastor, Rev Enaefe I. Ichipi.
Rev continued our teaching on Dominion over Sin, He said that the greatest struggle of many believers is not necessarily sin itself, but sin consciousness. The teaching focused on how believers can walk in dominion over sin by understanding what Christ has already accomplished through His death and resurrection.
Rev continued by saying that Jesus completely dealt with sin on the cross and that salvation comes only through believing in the finished work of Christ. Our attention was drawn to the fact that many believers still live under guilt, fear and condemnation even after receiving salvation, because of this consciousness. Rev explained that this wrong consciousness keeps people trapped in cycles of the acts of sin.
Using the story of Adam and Eve in Book of Genesis chapter 3, Rev showed that Adam’s greatest issue after disobeying God was not merely the action of sin, but the consciousness of guilt that caused him to hide from God. He pointed out that even after Adam sinned, God still came looking for him. This revealed that God’s desire has always been relationship rather than rejection or condemnation.
He explained that Adam and Eve tried to cover themselves with fig leaves, which symbolised works and self effort. God later covered them with animal skin, which Rev described as a picture of Christ’s sacrifice. The teaching stressed that believers cannot overcome sin through self effort, works of the law or self condemnation, but victory comes through resting in what Christ has already done.
Rev used the illustration of the bottle of water to explain how sin consciousness works. The more attention placed on something, the more people become conscious of it. He connected this to the law, explaining that constant focus on “thou shall not” increases awareness of sin rather than freedom from it.
From 1st John 3:19 - 21, Rev showed us that believers must assure their hearts before God. Even when the heart condemns, God is greater than the heart. Confidence before God comes through understanding righteousness in Christ rather than focusing on our mistakes or shortcomings. Being righteous consciousness changes how we behave; the believer lives right, not through fear, but through the revelation of God’s love. The more believers meditate on Christ’s finished work, the more they walk in peace, confidence, freedom and dominion over sin.
The teaching ended with an encouragement for believers to keep their focus on Christ’s love, righteousness and completed work on the cross. Rev said that the same faith that receives forgiveness is the same faith that produces miracles, provision and open doors in life.
