In commemoration of International Anti‑Corruption Day, observed on December 9 each year, civil society groups and government bodies have called for better orientation and active involvement of young people in the fight against systemic corruption. This year’s campaign, themed “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity,” emphasizes youth participation. A town‑hall meeting was held in Awka on Tuesday, bringing together representatives from government and non‑governmental organizations. The discussion focused on preventive strategies and mechanisms to combat corruption. Mrs. Josephine Onah, Anambra State Coordinator for Rule of Law and Anti‑Corruption (RoLAC), opened the session by stressing the importance of a locally‑developed anti‑corruption strategy that addresses specific systemic weaknesses and improves service delivery. She explained that the program’s anti‑corruption approach is home‑grown, with Anambra’s own framework identifying corruption issues and outlining implementation mechanisms. Based on this framework, the team has designed an initiative aimed at reforming service delivery across all levels, functioning as a value‑adding mechanism. The event highlighted the need for youth engagement and the creation of tailored solutions to reduce corruption and strengthen integrity in the state. Participants also discussed the role of education, digital tools, and community monitoring in sustaining the momentum beyond the day’s events for future generations.

Ethical Standard, Key to Strengthened War Against Corruption -ANSACS, RoLAC, CSOs

By Ifeoma Ezenyilimba

The Anambra State Anti-Corruption Strategy (ANSACS) and her implementation body, the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Program, alongside the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs)/ Accountability Network, Anambra State, have identified maintaining ethical standard as the key to strengthening the fight against corruption in the state.

The bodies stated this at a preparatory roundtable meeting ahead of the 2025 International Anti-Corruption Day Celebration (IACD), held today, Monday, December 8, 2025, at the Conference Hall of Finotel Classic Hotels, Awka, Anambra State.

Speaking on Global and Local Significance of International Anti-Corruption Day Celebration, the co-RoLAC Consultant for
Anti-Corruption Institutions and Systems Strengthening, Prof Onyukwu E. Onyukwu, described corruption as a menace of global proportion, which undermines democracy, erodes trusts in institutions, and slows down economic development.

Pointing out that weak implementation of policies and compliance due to weak institutions had been a persistent challenge towards tackling corruption, Prof Onyukwu, maintained that it was the collective responsibility of the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the Media to join hands in the fight against corruption. He added that the fight against corruption was a marathon which demanded consistent efforts and practices.

Onyeukwu, observed that weak institutions had been in place due to lack of ethical compliance, and stated that once people were guided by the rules, orderliness would be maintained and the system would be strengthened for better delivery.

The consultant, who also spoke on the global significance of International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) said the celebration tends to to sensitise the people on the need to rise against the destructive effects of corruption, which, he said, included disruption of access to essential services such as healthcare and education. He cited an example of someone who was denied admission into a university due to a particular selfish interest as an effect of corruption in education sector.

For her part, the lead RoLAC Consultant for
Anti-Corruption Institutions and Systems Strengthening, Prof Ada Chidi-Igbokwe, called for improved attitude to work so as to record success in the anti-corruption fight.

Prof Chidi-Igbokwe, identified wrong attitudes to work such as disregarding of clients, writing of names for other people in attendance lists, jumping cues in public places and parents enrolling their children in special exam centres as corrupt practices which should be tackled inwards.

Also speaking, the Anambra State Coordinator of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs)/Media Accountability and Anti-Corruption Initiative, Mrs Ugochi Freeman, stressed the need for people to develop right attitudes to life, and by so doing, eschew corruption.
According to her, the fight against corruption should start from every individual and family.

'Anything one does what he/she considers wrong in any form and what he hides from other people, that thing is corruption and should be stopped,'Freeman said.

Earlier in her remarks, the Anambra State Project Coordinator of Rule of Law and Anti Corruption, Dr Josephine Onah, said the media advocacy, awareness rally, road walk and sensitisation to schools, which formed part of the 2025 IACD activities, were to educate the public on why the ANSACS Implementation Bodies celebrate the International Anti-Corruption Day.

She enjoined all to be committed to their involvement in the celebration, so as to deliver the message of fight against corruption to Anambra citizens.

Goodness Media gathered that the 2025 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD), which will hold from December 9-12, 2025, has "Uniting With Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow's Integrity", as its theme.

CSOs Urged to Champion Passage of Criminal Code, Correctional Service Bills

By Gabriel Chy Alonta

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have been urged to take the frontline in advocating for the passage of critical justice reform bills, particularly the Criminal Code Bill and Correctional Service Bills, in order to strengthen Anambra State’s justice system and ensure protection for vulnerable citizens.

The call was made by the Anambra State Lead of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme, Dr. Josephine Onah, during a one-day planning meeting with CSO partners held in Awka. The engagement was designed to mobilize strategic action towards the passage of pending legal reforms and strengthen the advocacy capacity of CSOs.

Dr. Onah emphasized that the delay in enacting the bills continues to undermine justice delivery and human rights protection. She noted that the Criminal Code Bill, when passed, would align Nigeria’s penal provisions with modern legal standards, remove outdated punishments, and enhance safeguards for victims of abuse and violence. Likewise, the Correctional Service Bills are intended to reform prison administration, promote rehabilitation, and improve conditions for inmates, particularly those awaiting trial.

She further stressed the importance of issuing protection orders for victims during legal proceedings, especially in cases of gender-based violence and child abuse. Onah emphasized the role of CSOs in fast-tracking justice, particularly in health-related legal issues, as well as the effective implementation of existing laws like the Child Rights Law and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law.

Reacting to the discussions, CSO representatives acknowledged the critical need for urgent legislative reform and outlined key challenges, especially the bureaucratic hurdles in securing permanent protection orders for victims. They advocated for targeted advocacy visits to lawmakers, justice-sector stakeholders, and relevant MDAs, as part of coordinated efforts to ensure timely passage of the bills.

Participants also called for increased public awareness campaigns, community engagements, and media involvement to galvanize support for the reform agenda. They noted that the passage and implementation of these bills would go a long way in enhancing access to justice, reducing overcrowding in custodial centres, and improving Nigeria’s human rights profile.
