Centre for Career and Human Resources Development (CCHRD) was founded on the 31st May, 2012. It is a non-profit making, non-governmental organisation in Nigeria committed to complete youth capacity building, career development, adolescent reproductive health, and women and youth empowerment initiative designed to support government in curbing the problem of apparent ignorance about career prospect
and adolescent reproductive health among the youths, particularly those in secondary schools. Our Vision
To be a world class centre for excellent career building and talent development in line with interest, innate and natural abilities. Our Mission
To develop and support youths in early discovery of talent and life purpose (career) in line with interests, skills and natural abilities while developing their reproductive health. Our Motivation
The prevailing challenges facing the youths in Nigeria, especially those in secondary schools are notable academic failure, apparent ignorance about career prospect, difficulties in career choice and decision making, drug and substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and other related STIs and adolescents’ s*xual and reproductive health problems among others. Adding to these challenges is the fact that most of these students are teenagers in their transitional stage who are battling with the issue of identity confusion (who am I?). This problem of their inability to define who they really are, consequently leads to confusion and frustration on the area of career decision hence the question, “what am I good at?”. And if these two cogent questions are not quickly addressed in the life of any youth, there is a high tendency for such a youth to channel his richly accumulated psychic energy to unprofitable venture. Academic Failure:
The massive academic failure among the youths in secondary and tertiary institutions is a great cause for alarm. Students don’t value success through hard work any longer but will rather go to the so-called miracle centre to register for external examinations. They have poor reading culture, poor memories and low motivation, and teachers are not helping matters either
Ignorance about Career Prospect
In view of the apparent ignorance of many young people about career prospect, and in view of the personality maladjustment among school children, career officers and counsellors will be appointed in post-primary institutions” (NPE 1981:39). The need to employ services of professional Guidance Counsellors to help the youths in the area of career decision and personality adjustment cannot be over emphasised. The trend of unemployment and fear of uneasy access to job opportunity have driven many youths to base their career decision only on the so called popular professions such as Accountancy, Engineering, Law, Medicine among others, as against their innate and natural talents and mental abilities. Moreover, many parents have constrain their children’s career choice to only the “popular profession” (as mentioned above) which they think only suit their personalities and images of their families. This is why some would insist their children must study Medicine in the university even when such child/children are not medically gifted and do not possess mental ability and personality traits that match medical profession. Using appropriate standardised Psychometric instruments, we have gathered that cases of ignorance about career prospects and opportunities, academic failure and inappropriate career decision are more prevalent among teenagers in Nigeria, especially those in secondary school. HIV/AIDS and other related STIs:
There is a high increase in risk attitude and s*xual activities among adolescents which has been accompanied with dramatic increase in s*xually transmitted infections (STIs). The current report that young people (ages 15 – 24) are at the centre of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic, and the recent publication by UNAIDS that Africa will record 90 million cases of HIV/AIDS infections between 2012 and 2025, is a big challenge enough to appeal to the heart of any right thinking citizen concerning the future of our youths and that of the nation, thus finding preventive means of further spread of the disease. Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Problems:
The risk attitude of the adolescents toward s*xual activities is very high and keeps increasing at alarming rate. They are unquestionably at a vulnerable developmental stage as they attempt to navigate the difficult transition from childhood to adulthood. This is because many teenagers are ignorant about the challenge and trouble of developmental changes that are taking place in their body. They attempt to experiment within their peers and try out new things. They try to find solutions to questions, that Daddy and Mummy could not answer at home due to culture or personal aversive behaviour, from external sources. An unguided or misguided youth at this period will take a lot of risk behaviours which are capable of resulting to unplanned pregnancy, abortion, truancy, academic failure, drug abuse, challenging authorities, armed robbery and school dropout. It is against this backgrounds that CCHRD is launching out a massive career campaign, capacity building and training workshop, in its totality, to develop the youths’ future careers, educate them on adolescent reproductive health, provide intervention on the spread of HIV/AIDS and other related Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) among the youths and provide training on life building skills, especially, for those in secondary schools and others within the community who do not have the opportunity of formal schooling. Objectives and Goals
= To raise students/teenagers who can build careers purely on interests, talents, strengths and natural abilities that can guarantee future success in such career line.
= To enlighten and educate parents, teachers and general public on the need to allow and support young people to build and develop career in line with their personality traits, interest and natural ability and not to force a specific career of their own desire on the children.
= To champion early discovery of interest, talent, ability and career path through administration of appropriate psychometric instruments in secondary schools.
= To eliminate gender disparity and occupational stereotypes area of in career choice and development in Nigeria. There should be no masculine or feminine profession but rather, students should enter careers in which they have interest and ability to excel regardless of s*x or gender.
= To establish talent discovery and skill acquisition or training centre to assist those who cannot further their formal education (that is; those whose career cannot be pursued in higher institution) to acquire skills that will enable them to build careers upon their own strength and natural abilities. Health Objectives
= To provide information and sensitization on adolescents reproductive health to the home and community base youths
= To educate the youths on adolescents s*xuality and provide other useful information that will reduce their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS and other related STIs and prevent teenage pregnancy, s*xual and drug abuse among others.
= To provide HIV/AIDS and other STIs preventive intervention strategies and programmes, particularly, the application of psychological approach to behaviour modification and change, that will specifically appeal to the needs of the vulnerable youths, especially, those in secondary school.
= To modify adolescents’ behaviour to avoiding risk attitude, particularly, those relating to health, and to sublimate their s*xual and psychic energy to profitable academic and non-s*xual endeavour using psycho-educational approaches.
= To reduce women vulnerability to HIV/AIDS and other STIs through training on skill acquisition and economic empowerment.
= To train the youths on life-building and other related skills with which they can sublimate their psychic and s*xual energy into academic and other profitable ventures. Achieving the above objectives will lead to enhancing quality of education and instruction in our schools, facilitate better professional services and products in Nigeria which will in turn, lead to future job and career satisfaction.
