Driven by the vision of achieving a “healthier Africa”, AFENET, on April 16, 2026, conducted a one-day capacity-building workshop on Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) surveillance for personnel of the National Hospital, Abuja, sentinel site. The training equipped them to detect better, report, and respond to cases that could change a child’s life forever.

Behind every missed case is a child at risk. The workshop brought together key surveillance officers from the National Hospital, Abuja, Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) site. They addressed gaps in case identification and reporting, as well as in specimen collection, handling, and transportation. Through practical sessions, participants strengthened their skills in case detection, adherence to standard protocols, and accurate documentation.

With improved knowledge of platforms like SORMAS and the CRS data portal, participants are now better positioned to ensure data is complete, timely, and actionable. More importantly, they worked together to identify bottlenecks and develop realistic, site-specific action plans to drive lasting improvement.

When surveillance works, lives are protected, and every child gets a better chance at a healthy future.

AFENET NSTOP is financially and technically supported by the US CDC.

Lead poisoning remains a serious but preventable environmental health threat, with millions of children in Nigeria at risk of exposure.

To support national efforts to eliminate lead poisoning, the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET), under the Ministerial Inter-Agency Working Group on Lead Poisoning Elimination and with support from UNICEF, conducted the Blood Lead Levels and Children’s Environmental Health Assessment (BLL-CEHA) Survey in Lagos State. The survey aims to generate evidence on the burden of lead exposure among children and guide effective interventions.

Following field data collection, a five-day Data Analysis and Report Writing Workshop was held in Abuja (March 9–13, 2026), bringing together key stakeholders from government, research institutions, and partner organizations to review findings and develop policy-relevant insights.

Protecting children from lead exposure is an important step toward safeguarding their health, development, and future.

AFENET, through the Consequential Geography (CG) Project in collaboration with the Katsina SPHCB, implemented the Optimised Outreach Strategy (OOS) in 15 supported LGAs from March 10–15, 2026. The strategy aimed to reach children aged 0–23 months in underserved, hard-to-reach urban slums and missed communities with life-saving vaccines.

The OOS is one of the key CG strategic interventions designed to reduce the number of zero-dose children and improve Routine Immunisation coverage in targeted areas.

Through this initiative, AFENET continues to strengthen frontline health workers' capacity while empowering community actors to identify and reach eligible children with routine vaccinations.

Together with our funder, the US CDC, we remain committed to ensuring every child is identified, reached, and protected.

Vaccines are free, safe and effective. Vaccinate your children today.

AFENET, in collaboration with NCDC and partners, recently convened a strategic check-in meeting to reaffirm ongoing collaboration and formally reintroduce the University of Toronto and the SAVOR Project team to the broader stakeholder group.

The SAVOR Project focuses on strengthening the response to Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) by improving meningitis surveillance in high-risk countries across the African meningitis belt. A key component of the project is supporting the introduction of the novel pentavalent meningococcal vaccine, Men5CV, while also evaluating the effectiveness of existing vaccination programs. The initiative will generate evidence to guide decision-making for new implementation strategies and conduct post-implementation impact assessments following the introduction of the vaccine.

The three-year project, supported by the University of Toronto, will provide technical assistance, capacity building, and operational research to strengthen evidence-based decision-making for meningitis control.

Through strong partnerships and coordinated efforts, stakeholders remain committed to improving surveillance systems and ensuring that life-saving vaccines and interventions reach the populations that need them most

Supporting communities to reach every child with life-saving vaccines.

Through the Consequential Geography (CG) project, critical preparatory activities were conducted to strengthen the implementation of Optimized Outreach Strategy (OOS); one of the targeted interventions towards zero dose reduction and RI coverage improvement.

This included stakeholder engagement, sensitization of community leaders and influential persons and the training of OOS teams comprising RI service providers, recorders, house-to-house mobilizers, and town announcers.

By equipping frontline health workers and fostering community ownership, the initiative aims to improve identification and vaccination of zero-dose children, ensuring that no child is left behind.

Strengthening Vaccine Safety through Causality Assessment

From March 2-7, 2026, AFENET, with technical and financial support from the U.S. CDC, is supporting the NPHCDA to convene a National Causality Assessment Meeting.

The meeting is reviewing over 60 reported Serious Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) documented during the Phase 2 integrated Measles Rubella campaign activities to determine causality and strengthen vaccine safety monitoring.

The meeting brought together members of the National AEFI Causality Assessment Committee and representatives from key national agencies—including FMoH & SW, NAFDAC, NCDC, the Chairman of SDSNO, and the Chairman of the State Epidemiologist.

Participants are reviewing case documentation and applying standardized WHO causality assessment guidelines to determine the likelihood of a causal relationship between the reported events and vaccination.

The meeting reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening vaccine safety surveillance, ensuring transparent and evidence-based review of serious reported events, and sustaining public confidence in immunization programs.

Causality assessment remains a critical component of vaccine safety systems, ensuring that reported events are systematically investigated, accurately classified, and appropriately communicated to guide timely and effective public health action.

Lead Poisoning in Nigeria: A Hidden Threat to Our Children

⚠️ 80 million Nigerian children are exposed to lead, a toxin with no safe level. Children aged 9–59 months are most vulnerable.

📊 2010 Zamfara crisis: ~400 children died from lead poisoning. Outbreaks have also occurred in Sokoto, Niger, and Kaduna.

🧠 Impacts: Impaired cognition, learning problems, anemia, reduced productivity, and higher healthcare costs — poor communities suffer the most.

🩺 Our Lagos Survey:

Measures blood lead levels in children 12–59 months

Identifies household and environmental sources

Maps hotspots and risk factors

💡 Prevention is key: regulation of lead paint, artisanal mining, battery recycling, targeted screening, and environmental remediation.

Together, we can protect children and secure a healthier future.
