Call for the Immediate Release of Comrade Omoyele Sowore from Unlawful Police Detention

Justice for All Citizens, a foremost human rights organization committed to the defense of civil liberties and democratic values, strongly condemns the unlawful detention of senior comrade and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore by the Nigeria Police Force. His continued detention is not only unconstitutional but also a direct affront to his fundamental rights as guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights law.

It is a well established principle of justice that no party can be a judge in its own case. The ongoing case involving Mr. Sowore reportedly concerns allegations related to the conduct of the police. In such circumstances, the police cannot lawfully or ethically detain or investigate an individual in a matter where they are also the accusers. This violates the basic tenets of impartiality and due process. We therefore demand that any investigation or inquiry into Mr. Sowore’s actions be handled by an independent and neutral agency, in the interest of justice and fairness.

We further emphasize that the arrest and detention of Mr. Sowore amounts to an abuse of power and an attempt to criminalize dissent and silence critical voices. Mr. Sowore is a long-standing advocate for democracy, good governance, and human rights. Treating his activism as a criminal act sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the democratic values upon which our society is built.

We call on the Nigerian Police Force to immediately and unconditionally release Comrade Sowore, respect his rights, and refrain from actions that constitute harassment, intimidation, or arbitrary use of state power.

The world is watching. We will continue to stand in solidarity with Mr. Sowore and all those who courageously fight for justice, accountability, and the rule of law in Nigeria.

Justice delayed is justice denied.
