Yesterday Pad A Girl Foundation in partnership FIDA ANAMBRA AND FIDA UNIZIK commemorated international day of the girlchild with a one day online conference with over 100 attendees
The overall theme was: “The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis.”
Based on the speakers’ topics, here are the key points to note from the event:
1. Hon. Mimi Ifeoma Azikiwe (Topic: Legislating Hope: Bridging the Gap Between Representation and Reality)
• Focus: The crucial role of legislation and political representation in advancing the girl-child’s rights and welfare.
• Key Point: Advocating for laws and policies that not only grant rights but are also effectively implemented, ensuring that the girls’ needs and concerns translate from legislative chambers (representation) into tangible improvements in their lives (reality), especially during times of crisis.
2. Amara Muojeke (Topic: Justice on the Frontlines: The Role of Women Lawyers in Advancing Girl-Child Advocacy)
• Focus: The necessity of legal intervention and advocacy to protect girls, particularly those facing crises.
• Key Point: Highlighting the vital work of women lawyers in providing legal aid, challenging discriminatory practices, and ensuring that girls have access to justice to safeguard their rights against violence, exploitation, and discrimination.
3. Nwanadile Ifunanya Chinenyenwa (Topic: Digital Frontlines: Ways the Girl-Child Can Leverage Media to Drive Change)
• Focus: The power of digital media and technology as a tool for girls to lead change.
• Key Point: Encouraging and educating the girl-child on how to safely and strategically use social media and digital platforms for self-expression, awareness, advocacy, and mobilization, transforming them into “digital frontliners” who drive positive change.
