As we continue to reflect on the promise of Africa Day, we are reminded that the future of the continent must be built on justice, dignity, and people-centered development.

As Africa shapes its future through frameworks like the Africa Water Vision 2063, communities and right holders must remain at the center of every decision about water, development, and public infrastructure.

Water is not just a resource — it is life, health, dignity, and justice.

A people-centered Africa must guarantee accessible, affordable, and publicly accountable water systems for all.

The future of Africa’s water must be shaped with communities, not without them.

You cannot build sustainable water systems on exploited labour.
Workers’ rights are water rights—and both must be protected.

This Workers’ Day, Our Water Our Right Africa Coalition stands for fairness, safety, and inclusion.

Every community depends on water.
Every water system depends on workers because water is a public good.
So are the workers who keep it flowing.

Let’s build systems that protect both.

Behind every flowing tap is a worker. Yet too often, their voices are excluded from decisions about water governance.

On this Worker’s Day, Our Water Our Right Africa Coalition calls for democratic water systems where workers are heard, protected, and valued.

We also celebrate the hands behind every drop and call for systems that protect their rights, dignity, and voices.

Water governance must be people-centered—and worker-centered too!

Who really pays the price when water is privatized? 💧

In many communities, the burden falls most heavily on women and girls — the ones who walk farther, wait longer, and sacrifice more when water becomes expensive or harder to access.

As we commemorate World Water Day, join our Webinar for an important conversation exploring how water privatization impacts women and girls and why protecting public water systems matters now more than ever.

To commemorate World Water Day 2026, OWORAC hosted a press conference highlighting the deep link between water access and gender justice across Africa.

Speakers from across the continent shared powerful interventions on how women and girls continue to carry the heaviest burden of water crises — from long hours spent fetching water to the risks this poses to their education, health, and livelihoods.

The call was clear: Africa needs public, transparent, and gender-responsive water systems that put communities first.

Billions of people still lack access to safe water — but women and girls bear the heaviest burden.

Every step to fetch water is a step away from opportunity. Away from school, safety, and the chance to thrive.

On this World Water Day, we are reminded that no woman and girl should spend her day searching for water. Access to safe, affordable water must be a reality for all. 💧
