It was a historic day in India, as a tribal woman became the country's first tribal female president. Draupadi Murmu of Odisha was sworn in as India's 15th President yesterday.

Murmu stated after assuming India's highest constitutional post that her election as President is not a personal achievement, but rather the accomplishment of every poor person in the country. “My nomination is proof that the poor in India can not only dream but can fulfill it.”

Draupadi is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She is India's first indigenous, scheduled tribe president. Prior to her presidency, she served as the ninth Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021, and she held various portfolios in the cabinet of the Government of Odisha from 2000 to 2004.

Before entering politics, she worked as a clerk in the State Irrigation and Power Department from 1979 to 1983, and then as a teacher.
