Ayela wrapped her used pad in nylon and threw it into a drainage channel because there was no proper disposal bin in her school.

Weeks later, heavy rainfall flooded the area.

After the Menstrual Hygiene Day event at Ooni Girls Grammar School, Ayela walked home differently.

Before the event, she used to miss classes every month. She stayed quiet whenever menstruation was mentioned because she felt ashamed and confused. Sometimes she used old clothes because pads were too expensive. She thought pain, stains, and fear were just things girls had to endure silently.

But that day changed something in her.

She listened carefully as the facilitators explained menstrual hygiene, body changes, and how to manage her period safely. For the first time, she asked questions without fear. She received sanitary pads, learned how to track her cycle, and understood that menstruation was not a curse or embarrassment.

The next month, Ayela went to school confidently during her period. No hiding. No fear of stains. No staying at home.

She even helped her younger cousin understand what menstruation means.

What seemed like a one day event became a turning point in Ayela’s life. Because when a girl has knowledge, support, and dignity, everything begins to change.

Ayela is a 13 year old girl who started missing school every month because of her period. Without access to sanitary pads, she used old cloths and sometimes stayed with them for an entire day.

Soon, Ayela began experiencing itching, rashes, and infections from poor menstrual hygiene. She constantly worried about stains and bad odour in school. Her classmates laughed at her one day after noticing a stain on her uniform.

Ashamed and embarrassed, Ayela withdrew from her friends, avoided class activities, and her academic performance began to drop.

Poor menstrual hygiene affected Ayela’s health, confidence, education, and dignity. Sadly, many girls across underserved communities face the same reality every month.
