MicCom Cancer Foundation established in December 2013, is registered NGO/CBO (community based organization)whose vision is the empowering of individuals and communities to reduce the burden of cancer in Nigeria. This is to be achieved through promotion and prevention through awareness, education,early detection and facilitate treatment of cancers of the breast, cervix and prostate. The demise of t
he MicCom family Matriarch, Late Engr. Olufunke Ponnle, of endometrial cancer in 2012, motivated the MicCom family to further their already very expansive philanthropic efforts into the engagement in cancer prevention and the mitigation of its impacts. Easily one of the debilitating ailments in the world, cancer, in its various manifestations accounts for more deaths than the combined Terminal causalities from HIV/AIDS, Malaria & Tuberculosis. In Nigeria, the prevalence rate is on the increase, claiming some 80,000 lives annually with as many as 10 people dying from cancer every hour. Unfortunately, this scourge remain undetected early because there are limited available functional plans to prevent the disease, cause early detection and provide treatment to patients. With her corporate headquarters in Ada, Osun State and a number of outreaches in the neighboring communities, the foundation in her first year has provided counseling, treatment and support services for the target cancer – breast , cervix and prostate. It has also in advocacies through health talks, partnership, awareness campaigns as well as the production, circulation & broadcast of awareness information via print & electronic media. The foundation is seeking partnership with individuals and organizations to help reduce this prevalent scourge. This past year has focused on establishing the fundamental structure and back bone for the foundation which is included but not limited to the following:
i The Foundation clinic which also double as a primary health care centre. This includes the building, the several medical equipment for cancer screening e.g. cryotherapy equipments, colposcope, mammograms and a full history laboratory; a complete secretariat with a full equipped library with access to literary resources. ii identification and engagement of partners inclusive of full staff, technical expert as well as collaboration with ObafemiAwolowoTeaching Hospital, Ile Ife. iii liaison with the state of Osun in the provision of advocacy and awareness campaigns across all of the neighboring communities with the plan of expanding into other states in the country.
