The tragic death of Mena is a painful reminder of why advocacy for justice, accountability, and strong institutions remains critical in our society.

From an SDG perspective, this speaks directly to SDG 16—Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. No individual, regardless of the circumstances, deserves to be denied due process or subjected to extrajudicial actions. Justice must not only be done, but be seen to be done through transparent and lawful processes.

As young advocates with Youth Nigeria, we must continue to raise our voices for a system where human rights are protected, law enforcement is accountable, and every life is treated with dignity. Sustainable development cannot thrive in an environment where justice is compromised and l understand these officers have been moved to force headquarters and dismissal is been recommended but that won't be enough if the officers are not charged for murder case and then we can begin to rebuild trust in our institutions and ensure such incidents do not repeat itself.

OKORIE WELCOMES GOV. OBOREVWORI TO ₦59.9BN UROMI JUNCTION FLYOVER FLAG-OFF IN AGBOR

By Ika-Times e-Newspaper

The National Vice Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Abuja, Ambassador Kenneth Okorie, has warmly welcomed the Executive Governor of Delta State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, to Agbor for the official flag-off of the ₦59.9 billion Uromi Junction Flyover project, describing the initiative as historic, visionary and people-oriented.

Amb. Okorie, in a statement made available to newsmen on the sidelines of the event, praised Governor Oborevwori for his unwavering commitment to infrastructural renewal and inclusive development across Delta State. He noted that the choice of Agbor for such a landmark project reflects the Governor’s deep understanding of the strategic importance of the area as a commercial, transportation and cultural hub linking Delta State to Edo and other parts of the country.

According to the NYCN National Vice Chairman, the Uromi Junction Flyover is not just a road project but a bold economic intervention that will significantly ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians who daily ply the busy Agbor–Uromi–Benin axis. He stressed that for decades, the junction had remained a major bottleneck, often causing gridlocks, accidents and loss of productive hours.

Amb. Okorie commended Governor Oborevwori for what he described as “practical governance anchored on the MORE Agenda,” adding that the flyover will stimulate local and regional economic activities by improving the movement of goods and services. He explained that traders, farmers, transporters and small business owners will benefit immensely from smoother logistics, lower transportation costs and increased commercial turnover.

He further highlighted the employment opportunities the project will generate, both directly and indirectly, especially for youths in Ika land and neighbouring communities. From construction jobs to allied services such as supply of materials, logistics and hospitality, Amb. Okorie said the project would inject fresh life into the local economy and empower many families.

The youth leader also applauded the Governor’s attention to urban planning and environmental aesthetics, noting that the flyover, when completed, will enhance the outlook of Agbor metropolis and position it as a modern city worthy of its historical and socio-economic status. He expressed confidence that the project would attract further investments and open the door for more developmental partnerships.

Amb. Okorie used the occasion to reassure the Governor of the unflinching support of Nigerian youths, particularly members of the NYCN, towards the successful ex*****on and protection of the project. He urged youths in the area to see the flyover as their collective asset and to cooperate with contractors and relevant authorities to ensure timely and quality delivery.

He concluded by describing Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori as “a listening leader, a bridge-builder and a Governor with a human face,” whose legacy, he said, will be remembered for transforming infrastructure into instruments of economic growth, unity and hope for the people of Delta State.

OKORIE CALLS ON NIGER DELTA YOUTHS TO EMULATE NIGERIA’S HEROES

By Ika-Times e-Newspaper

As Nigeria marks this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Vice Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Abuja, Amb. Kenneth Okorie, has issued a passionate call to youths of the Niger Delta to emulate the courage, discipline and selfless patriotism of Nigeria’s fallen and serving military heroes.

Amb. Okorie made this call on Thursday 15th January, 2026 during a press briefing held in commemoration of the Nigerian Armed Forces, where he paid glowing tribute to officers and men of the Nigerian Army and other security services who have laid down their lives in defence of the nation’s unity, sovereignty and democratic ideals.

According to him, Armed Forces Remembrance Day is not only a moment of solemn reflection, but also a powerful reminder of the sacrifices that have kept Nigeria together despite daunting challenges. He stressed that the bravery and commitment displayed by Nigeria’s military heroes should serve as a moral compass for young people across the country, particularly in the Niger Delta region.

“The blood, sweat and ultimate sacrifices of our fallen heroes must never be forgotten,” Amb. Okorie stated. “They stood firm in the face of danger so that we can enjoy peace, freedom and national identity. As youths, we must honour them not just with words, but by emulating their discipline, patriotism, resilience and commitment to national service.”

He urged Niger Delta youths to reject violence, criminality and all forms of social vices, noting that true heroism lies in contributing positively to society, promoting peace and unity, and defending the integrity of the nation through lawful and productive means.

Amb. Okorie further called on young people to support the Nigerian Armed Forces by cooperating with security agencies, sharing credible information, and fostering community-based peace initiatives that will strengthen national security and social cohesion.

He also used the occasion to commend the gallantry of serving military personnel currently deployed across various theatres of operation, describing them as modern-day heroes who continue to put their lives on the line to protect Nigerians.

“As a nation, we owe our Armed Forces a debt of gratitude,” he added. “Their sacrifices should inspire a new generation of patriotic youths who are ready to build, not destroy; to unite, not divide; and to serve Nigeria with honour and integrity.”

Amb. Okorie concluded by calling on governments at all levels and well-meaning Nigerians to continuously support the families of fallen heroes, stressing that caring for them is a sacred responsibility and a true mark of national appreciation.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the National Youth Council of Nigeria to mobilizing youths across the Niger Delta and beyond towards peacebuilding, patriotism and constructive engagement in nation-building, in honour of Nigeria’s fallen and living heroes.

OKORIE'S NEW YEAR MESSAGE TO YOUTHS OF THE NIGER DELTA – 2026

As the new year 2026 dawns, I Amb. Kenneth Okorie, the Vice President South-south of the National Youth Council of Nigeria NYCN, Abuja extend warm greetings and renewed hope to the resilient youths of Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Edo States. You are the strength of the Niger Delta, the heartbeat of our communities, and the drivers of the future we all desire. Despite the challenges of the past years, your courage, creativity and determination have continued to shine. 2026 is a year of fresh beginnings, restoration, and real opportunities.

The Office of the Vice President, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) remains fully committed to your progress. In the coming months, we will be rolling out life-changing, youth-centered programmes designed to promote peacebuilding, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, leadership development, digital innovation, sports development, and community-based empowerment across the Niger Delta states. These initiatives are structured to unlock your potential, reduce restiveness, create sustainable livelihoods, and position youths as partners in development—not spectators.

Our focus in 2026 is clear: human capital development. Through strategic partnerships with government agencies, private sector stakeholders, development partners and civil society organizations, we will deliver capacity-building trainings, access to grants and mentorship, vocational skills, tech and creative economy opportunities, and platforms that amplify youth voices in governance. We are determined to build a Niger Delta where peace thrives, talents are rewarded, and every young person has a fair chance to succeed.

To the youths of the Niger Delta, this is your year to rise with purpose, embrace unity, reject violence, and choose progress. Believe in yourselves, organize positively, and prepare to take advantage of the opportunities ahead. The NYCN stands with you—listening, acting, and delivering. Together, we will turn hope into action and dreams into reality.

Beyond programmes and policies, our approach in 2026 will be driven by inclusiveness, transparency, and measurable impact. We are committed to engaging youths at the grassroots, listening to their realities, and designing interventions that respond directly to local needs. Every initiative will prioritize accountability and sustainability, ensuring that benefits reach genuine beneficiaries and leave lasting value within our communities.

We also recognize that peace and development are inseparable. As such, the NYCN will intensify its advocacy for dialogue, conflict prevention, and youth-led peace initiatives across the Niger Delta. We will continue to work closely with traditional institutions, security agencies, community leaders, and youth groups to promote harmony, discourage criminality, and foster an environment where development can thrive.

In this new year, we call on governments at all levels to deepen their engagement with young people, not merely as beneficiaries but as co-creators of solutions. Youth inclusion in policymaking, budgeting, and implementation remains critical to achieving sustainable development in the Niger Delta. The energy, innovation, and insight of our youths must be harnessed to shape policies that affect their lives and futures.

To our partners in the private sector, development space, and the international community, we reaffirm our readiness for collaboration. The Niger Delta is rich not only in natural resources but also in human potential. Strategic investments in youth-driven enterprises, education, technology, sports, and the creative industry will yield dividends far beyond 2026 and contribute meaningfully to national growth.

As we step boldly into the new year, let us move with faith, discipline, and collective responsibility. The journey ahead may demand sacrifice and resilience, but together we can redefine the narrative of the Niger Delta. On behalf of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, South-South Zone, I assure you of steadfast leadership, purposeful action, and unwavering commitment to your aspirations. Happy New Year, and welcome to a year of impact, unity, and shared progress.
