🍎♻️ Happy Sustainable Gastronomy Day 🍽️🌱

Championed by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) , today is a day to celebrate and support cuisine that ensures sustainability ♻️ in production, transportation and consumption of food as means to combat food loss and waste.

Care Global Development Initiative calls 📣 on citizens to purchase locally-grown food products as it helps to 💹 boost the local economy, 🌾💰 support farmers’ livelihood and 🚚💨 reduce the greenhouse gases and resources used in transporting food. Not to mention, it is often cheaper for consumers 💰📉.

Nigeria is no stranger to the devasting consequences of deforestation and drought which include water scarcity, soil degradation, food insecurity, and loss of biodiversity. Also, prolonged food insecurity and water scarcity contributes to resource-based conflicts happening in Nigeria.

Thankfully, it is not too late to act. I Care Global Development Initiative urges governments to combat desertification and drought by🪙 investing in sustainable land and water management, 💪🏿 strengthening governance, 📋 improving drought preparedness, and 🧰 supporting community-led restoration efforts. 🫶🏿Together we can save our lands.

Farmers are undeniably the backbone of our society. 🌾
Beyond the food we eat multiple times a day, which many of us enjoy the fruits of their labour more than three times a day 😉, farmers also produce the fibres we wear and use daily, such as cotton, linen, and h**p. They even contribute to the medicines we rely on.

that wheat can be grown in Nigeria 🇳🇬?

Many people believe that wheat can only be grown in colder ❄️countries, but wheat farming is possible in parts of Northern Nigeria during the harmattan season, when cooler temperatures and morning dew create suitable growing conditions.

At I Care Global Development Initiative, we support wheat farmers in Kano State because strengthening local agriculture means strengthening livelihoods 💰, food security 🍞, and community resilience 💪. Every bag harvested represents the hard work of farmers feeding families and supporting local economies.

🌍 Climate change is no longer a distant threat. Its effects are visible all around us. From floods and droughts to declining agricultural productivity, communities are already experiencing the loss of livelihoods, property, and, in some cases, lives.

Yet, there is hope. According to the UN Environment Programme, climate action today could prevent millions of deaths and save trillions of dollars in economic losses by 2050.

On this World Environment Day, under the theme , I Care Global Development Initiative reaffirms its commitment to addressing climate change through climate-smart agriculture and other nature-based solutions that strengthen community resilience and protect our environment.
