Happy International Worker's Day!!!!!

On this Worker's Day, the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), FCT Chapter, joins the world in celebrating the contributions of all workers who continue to build our homes, institutions and nation with resilience and dedication.

We especially recognize persons with disabilities who remain active contributors in various sectors despite persistent barriers in access to employment, workplace inclusion and reasonable accommodation.

In line with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, employment of persons with disabilities is not optional because 5% reservation is stipulated, it is a legal right.

The Act clearly prohibits discrimination in recruitment, training, and workplace practices, and mandates that employers provide reasonable accommodation to ensure persons with disabilities can function effectively and contribute meaningfully.

Yet, the reality remains that many workplaces are still not inclusive.

Accessibility gaps, negative attitudes, lack of assistive support and poor enforcement of the law continue to limit equal participation.

Inclusion goes beyond hiring. A truly inclusive workforce means:

Accessible and barrier-free environments

Equal access to information and communication

Provision of reasonable accommodation where needed within the FCT

Fair opportunities for growth and leadership

Respect for dignity and diversity in the workplace

We must ask ourselves as a society and as employers:

Do persons with disabilities have reasonable accommodation to function effectively in your workplace?

Inclusion is not charity.
It is justice. It is law. It is essential for national development.

This Worker's Day, we call for stronger implementation of disability inclusion in all sectors so that no one is left behind in the FCT and the world of work.

Happy Workers’ Day.

JONAPWD FCT Advocacy Visit: A Step Towards Inclusion

On March 19, 2026, the leadership of Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), FCT Chapter, paid a strategic advocacy visit to Dayo Benjamin-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary, Women and Children Affairs Secretariat.

The visit marked a shift from charity to institutional partnership, as key issues affecting Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) were presented, including:

✔ Establishment of the FCT Agency for PWDs

✔ Access to healthcare and sign language services

✔ Enforcement of 5% employment quota

✔ Accessible infrastructure and data inclusion

✔ Sustainable operational support for JONAPWD

We also emphasized the need for targeted support for women with disabilities and skills over short-term palliatives.

In response, the Mandate Secretary made key commitments:

Support for establishing the FCT PWD Agency (with World Bank collaboration)

Inclusion of women with disabilities in media advocacy.

Expanded welfare support to underserved disability communities.

New partnerships to drive inclusion.

This engagement is a strong step towards ensuring that persons with disabilities are seen, heard, and included in governance.

Nothing about us, without us.

From 25–27 February 2026, JONAPWD FCT participated in a high-level consultative meeting convened by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to develop a National Training Manual on Disability-Inclusive Health for healthcare professionals.

This initiative seeks to unify existing public and private sector manuals into one national document that will guide the training of health workers across all 774 LGAs in Nigeria.

During the interactive session, JONAPWD FCT commended the Honourable Minister and the Director of Family Health for this timely intervention to address attitudinal and institutional barriers faced by persons with disabilities in health facilities. We also recommended future reviews to ensure disability-specific interventions are properly captured.

We remain committed to ensuring that disability inclusion moves from policy to practice within Nigeria’s health system.

*Tribute to Mrs. Blessing Ikwueze*

With humble submission to the will of Almighty God, the Disability Community mourns the painful loss of a beloved mother, sister, friend, and wife, Mrs. Blessing Ikwueze, she is the wife of Mr. Alphonsus Ikwueze, the Deaf cluster ELCOM representative at previous JONAPWD FCT Chapter Election. whose passed on to glory on 31st December 2025.

Her passing came as a rude shock to us all. Until her demise, Late Mrs. Blessing Ikwueze served selflessly as the Vice Chairperson of the Deaf Women Association of Nigeria (DWAN), FCT Chapter. She was a woman of warmth, joy, and boundless energy whose presence brought light and encouragement to everyone around her.

She sadly passed on following sudden complications during surgery in Enugu, where she had traveled to attend her cousin’s house warming. She had eagerly planned to return to Abuja to celebrate her daughter’s birthday and welcome the New Year with her family. This painful loss has left our hearts heavy with grief. Yet, even in our sorrow, we place our trust in God’s higher purpose, though it is difficult for us to understand.

As we begin this new year under the shadow of this loss, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone for your prayers, love, and unwavering support. Our strength lies in our unity. I encourage us all to use this moment for sober reflection, prayer, and renewal.

We also humbly urge everyone to remember the family she has left behind. Please pray for the peaceful repose of her soul, and ask God to grant her family comfort and enduring peace.

May God grant the Ikwueze family the strength to bear this irreparable loss, and may He comfort us all as we move forward together in love and unity.

From the Office of the Acting Chairman, JONAPWD FCT Chapter

Dear Comrades, Stakeholders, and Distinguished Partners,

2025 Year-End Appreciation & Strategic Outlook For 2026

As we bid farewell to 2025 today, December 31st, I find myself reflecting on the journey we have shared with deep gratitude and, above all, under God’s divine guidance. On behalf of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), FCT Chapter, I express my heartfelt appreciation for your prayers, your resilience, and your unwavering support.

When I first addressed you as Acting Chairman on September 27th, 2025, following a difficult period in our chapter’s history, I made a solemn promise: to uphold our Constitution and ensure continuity in our leadership. I stated then that our actions were never a personal fight, but a necessary defense of the laws that protect us all.

Today, we are proud to say we have kept that promise. To our members, stakeholders, and development partners, let the record show: there is no crisis within JONAPWD FCT. We are united, focused, and moving forward.

An African proverb says: "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together." We have gone far because of those standing behind and beside us.

* To our Board of Trustees (BOT): You are the true pillars of this movement. We thank you for being our strength, for your constant guidance, and for providing the stability we needed to transition from uncertainty to impact.

* To the National Executive Committee (National Exco): We thank you for the oversight and synergy that keeps our chapter aligned with the national vision. We are grateful for your partnership and will continue to work in harmony.

* To our Cluster Heads: I extend a special thank you for the trust you have placed in our administration. You are the direct link to our members, and your dedication ensures that no cluster is left behind. Thank you for your patience and your tireless advocacy.

* To the Members and Executive Council: I appreciate your hard work and the collaborative spirit you have shown over these last few months. Your commitment to the "JONAPWD FCT First" agenda has made our recent milestones possible.

* To our Media Partners: Specifically The Qualitative Magazine and Inclusive News Network, thank you for always keeping us abreast and ensuring our voices are heard by the public and policymakers.

* To our Development Partners: We extend our profound appreciation to Medicaid Foundation, CBM International, SFHF, DEVATOP, and the Deaf Women Aloud Initiative (DWAI). You have been more than just collaborators; you are strategic allies who have provided the technical and support necessary for our transition. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to "Nothing about us, without us."

In just four months, we have translated our promises into reality:

* The 20-Year Breakthrough: We have secured and opened our first-ever official JONAPWD FCT bank account—a victory for transparency and independence.

* Strengthened Partnerships: We have actively partnered with Medicaid, CBM International, INEC FCT, NSCDC FCT, SFHF, DEVATOP, AEA and FCT Women Secretariat and FCT Social Development Secretariat, ensuring our cluster heads are at the table where decisions are made.

Our 2026 Advocacy Mandate: The Road Ahead

As I promised in my first address, we are intensifying our advocacy for equal access. In 2026, we will focus on

1. The FCT Disability Agency & Tax Relief
Our primary focus is structural empowerment. We will not rest until the FCT Agency for Persons with Disabilities is fully established. Furthermore, we will also push for Tax Relief policies for PWDs to ease the current economic burden.

2. We are poised to partner with
Deaf Women Initiative (DWAI) on her project to push for Inclusive Budget for PWD in six area council such as AMAC, Gwagwalada, Bwari, Kuje, Kwali, and Abaji and ensure functional Disability Desks and Inclusive budget for PWDs at the grassroots level.

3. We are also push for subsidized healthcare, business capitalization grants, and the 5% employment quota for qualified PWDs across all FCTA departments.

Finally, in my first address, I pledged to be your humble servant. Today, that commitment is stronger than ever. I want to encourage u to continue to draw strength from our shared experiences and work collaboratively to build a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come.

Once again, thank you for your trust. Thank you for your support. Together, we are pushing boundaries.

Warm regards and a Happy New Year to you all!

JONAPWD FCT Joins the 16 Days of Activism
JONAPWD FCT actively participated in the 16 Days of Activism to amplify the voices of women with disabilities who experience technologically facilitated gender-based violence—often facing marginalization three times over.

We affirm our unwavering commitment to all persons with disabilities, with a special focus on women and girls with disabilities, ensuring their rights, safety, and inclusion remain central to our advocacy and programmes.

Together, we continue to work towards a Nigeria where no one is left behind.

"JONAPWD FCT at the 2-Day National Technical Committee on Disability-Inclusive Health Meeting
From 4th to 5th December 2025, JONAPWD FCT participated in the National Technical Committee on Disability-Inclusive Health meeting held at Barcelona Hotel, Abuja. The meeting brought together government ministries, MDAs, donor organizations, CSOs, and OPDs to review progress and strengthen collaboration toward inclusive and accessible healthcare for persons with disabilities.

The Ministry of Health shared updates on the GASHE Project, while other ministries, including the Ministry of Education and development partners such as Sightsavers, CBM Global Disability Inclusion, and WHO highlighted their interventions.

JONAPWD FCT, represented by Ms. Sussan Ihuoma and Mr. Kalu, shared the progress we have made in our first seven months of office, including:

Restructuring the organization for better governance.

Advocating for inclusive health and community services for persons with disabilities.

One key discussion emphasized the need to reach rural communities and persons affected by neglected tropical diseases to ensure they are part of the disability movement. JONAPWD remains committed to collaboration and partnerships that strengthen the knowledge of right-holders and duty-bearers, and break down institutional, infrastructural, economic, and attitudinal barriers.

We are proud to contribute to national efforts to make healthcare inclusive for all Nigerians with disabilities. Together, we can ensure no one is left behind!
