NYCNN South South Region, led by our National Co-Coordinator, Amb. Racheal Bassey, alongside the Biodiversity Rescue Club, Calabar, continued its strategic advocacy on the proposed Esierebom Mangrove Restoration Site in Calabar South LGA.

The team paid an advocacy visit to the Cross River State Forestry Commission, presenting a memorandum calling for transparent environmental governance, strict Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) compliance, meaningful stakeholder engagement, and climate-resilient, nature-based solutions.

The Chairman of the Commission, Rt. Hon. Deacon George Oben-Etchi, PhD, commended the initiative and pledged to conduct an on-site inspection to support informed decisions and appropriate interventions for the affected coastal community.

In commemoration of the 2026 International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, the Nigerian Youth Climate Negotiators Network (NYCNN), Cross River State Chapter, paid an advocacy visit to the Cross River State Council on Climate Change, the Green Economy Commission, and the Blue Economy Consortium.

Led by our National Co-Coordinator, Amb. Racheal Bassey, alongside NYCNN Cross River members and the Biodiversity Rescue Club, Calabar, the team engaged stakeholders on the proposed ultra-modern market project at the Esierebom mangrove restoration site in Calabar South LGA.

The Director General of the Cross River State Council on Climate Change, Dr. Edu Effiom, assured the delegation that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), ESG considerations, flood control measures, and other environmental safeguards would be thoroughly reviewed, with further stakeholder engagements to follow.

As we mark this year's theme, "Protecting These Vulnerable Ecosystems to Combat Climate Change and Safeguard Coastal Communities," NYCNN reaffirms its commitment to evidence-based advocacy that balances development with environmental sustainability.

NYCNN AND IKORO RADIO 93.3 FM DELIVER SOUTH-EAST NIGERIA’S FIRST YOUTH-LED CLIMATE BROADCAST IN IGBO, CALLING ON GOVERNMENTS AND YOUNG PEOPLE ACROSS THE REGION TO ACT

On 17th July 2026, the National Youth Climate Negotiators Network (NYCNN), in partnership with the Abia State Ministry of Environment, made history on Ikoro Radio 93.3 FM delivering South-East Nigeria’s first structured, youth-led climate broadcast entirely in the Igbo language.

Guest Speaker Amb. Queen Amazu , NDC 3.0 Youth Champion and NYCNN South-East Focal Point, and Co-Presenter Stanley Amarachi, took listeners across the South-East through the causes, effects, and solutions of climate change in a language millions of Igbo-speaking Nigerians finally understand.

The urgency is real. Over 600 gully erosion sites scar Abia, Anambra, and Imo States. Nearly 5,000 Abians were displaced by flooding in 2025 alone. Yet climate information has long been communicated only in English, leaving farmers, market women, and young people across the South-East outside the conversation. This broadcast asserts plainly that language inclusion is a climate justice issue and that Nigeria’s NDC 3.0 must reach every community, in every tongue.

NYCNN calls on the youth of all five South-East states Abia, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, and Ebonyi to join youth climate bodies, engage local governments, and step into regional, national, and global climate representation. And we call on all five state governments to recognise youth as partners, invest in indigenous-language climate communication, and embed SDG 13 Climate Action into policy, schools, and community programmes without further delay.

Across North-East Nigeria, especially in Taraba State, farming communities are facing the growing impacts of climate change—from soil erosion, unstable rainfall, and pest attacks to poor transportation and limited access to water, particularly for women farmers.

At NYCNN, we are working in synergy to negotiate climate justice while driving youth-led adaptation and mitigation solutions for a more resilient ecosystem and sustainable future.
