Following our first session of Women In The Race, where we had an engaging and eye-opening conversation with Dr. Esther Nkem Okereke, the NRM female presidential candidate for the 2027 Presidential Election, we are continuing this campaign by spotlighting more women across different levels of the political landscape.

This week, we turn our spotlight to Precious Adaku Ogbu Sylvester, an indigenous daughter of Igbo Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, a Quantity Surveyor, Business Owner and Humanitarian, and a candidate for the office of the House of Representatives for Nsukka/Igbo Eze South Federal Constituency of Enugu State on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

During this session, we will explore her journey into politics, what inspired her to contest, the challenges women face in political participation, her vision for her constituency, and what she hopes to do differently if elected.

At Female Youth Network, we believe that increasing women’s visibility in politics begins with creating platforms where their voices, ideas and aspirations can be heard and examined.

A number that should make us pause. Women make up nearly half of Nigeria’s population, yet their representation in spaces where decisions are made remains disproportionately low. Representation is not merely about occupying seats; it is about ensuring that women’s voices, experiences, perspectives, and leadership are part of shaping the decisions that affect everyone.

At Female Youth Network, we believe in a society where women and girls are not only encouraged to participate but are empowered to lead, influence decisions, and have a meaningful seat at the table.

Gender inclusion is not a favour. It is a fundamental part of building a more representative and equitable society. That’s one of the things we are about at Female Youth Network. 🤍

On Saturday, we launched our “Women In The Race” campaign, and we were privileged to have a conversation with one of the two female presidential candidates in Nigeria, Dr. Esther Nkem Okereke of National Rescue Movement(NRM). It was an impactful and truly eye-opening session.

Dr. Esther Nkem Okereke is a remarkably accomplished woman, yet much of her story and achievements are rarely highlighted by the media. Beyond holding a doctorate degree, she is a humanitarian, a well-grounded “Wazobia” Nigerian, and a woman who believes that leadership should be done with both the heart and the head.

As an organization, we will be reaching out to more women vying for political positions at both the executive and legislative levels. Through these engagements, we hope to encourage greater gender inclusion, amplify the voices of women in politics, and contribute to better representation of women in Nigeria.

This is one of the things Female Youth Network stands for: creating platforms that encourage women to step forward, participate, lead, and take their rightful place in shaping the future of our country.

Women belong in the race. Women belong at the table. Women belong in leadership.

“Mentors are our mirrors of possibilities.”

The above powerful words were shared by our guest speaker, Anita Achagwa, during last week’s Girl Child Development Advocacy Online Expert Discussion, themed “Preparing the Girl Child for the Future of Work.”

As we prepare girls for a rapidly changing world of work, mentorship remains an important part of the journey. Girls need opportunities to learn, but they also need to see what is possible.

A mentor can become a living reflection of possibilities helping a girl envision herself as a professional, a leader, an innovator, an entrepreneur, a decision-maker, and so much more.

When girls see women who have walked paths they aspire to take, possibilities become more tangible, and aspirations can begin to feel achievable.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to see a future she can become. Sometimes, a mentor is the mirror that helps her see it. đź’›

Since launching the Girl Child Development Advocacy Online Expert Discussion in July, Female Youth Network has successfully hosted 10 amazing Guest Speakers, creating a platform where young women can learn, engage, and gain valuable insights on issues that shape their lives and futures.

Hearing this beautiful testimonial from Chiemeke Emmanuella, one of our attendees, fills our hearts with so much joy. It is a powerful reminder that these conversations are making a meaningful difference in the lives of girls and young women.

Through every session, we are committed to creating spaces that educate, inspire, empower, and transform young women into confident individuals and the capable leaders of tomorrow.

WHEN THERE IS NO PEACE, WOMEN AND GIRLS OFTEN PAY A HEAVY PRICE.

In 2024, 676 million women and girls lived within 50 kilometres of a deadly conflict event, the highest number recorded since the 1990s. Sexual violence in conflict also increased by 25%, with women and girls accounting for 92% of reported victims.

These are not just statistics. Behind every number is a woman whose life, safety, education, livelihood or future may have been disrupted by conflict.

However, women are not only victims of conflict. Women are peacebuilders. Women are leaders. Women are agents of change. Unfortunately, women remain significantly underrepresented in peace processes. In recent years, women have held only about 1 in 10 peace negotiator roles and 1 in 8 mediator roles.

At Female Youth Network, we believe lasting peace must include women at every level, from communities to the tables where decisions about peace, security and the future are made.

This International Day of Peace, we call for peace that protects, peace that includes and peace that creates opportunities for every woman and girl to live, learn, lead and thrive.

Peace is more than the absence of war. Peace is safety. Peace is dignity. Peace is opportunity. Peace is inclusion. Every woman and girl deserves all four.

WOMEN IN THE RACE

As part of our commitment to promoting women’s participation and representation in politics in Nigeria, Female Youth Network is launching “Women In The Race”, an initiative dedicated to spotlighting women who are contesting for political office ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Through this campaign, we will engage women across different levels of the electoral process to learn about their journeys into politics, the challenges they have encountered, their perspectives on women’s participation in leadership, and their vision for public service.

We are kicking off the campaign tomorrow with an interview with Dr. Esther Nkem Okereke, the presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) and one of the two women on INEC’s final list of presidential candidates for the 2027 election.

Our conversation will explore her political journey, her vision for Nigeria, her motivations for seeking the highest elective office in the country, and her experience as a woman navigating Nigeria’s political space.

At Female Youth Network, we believe that women’s voices, experiences and aspirations deserve to be heard, understood and documented.

This is more than an interview. It is a conversation about women, leadership and the future of Nigeria.

Girls’ access to education is more than having a school building.

As Hon. Hadiza Malumfashi Shehu highlighted during our Girl Child Development Advocacy Online Expert Discussion last week, true access means creating an environment where girls can safely enrol, consistently, and effectively learn, remain in school, and complete their education. Building schools and recruiting teachers are important steps, but they are only part of the solution. We must also address the barriers that prevent girls from attending school regularly, learning effectively, and staying in school until completion.

Every girl deserves more than a place in a classroom. She deserves the opportunity to learn, thrive, and complete her education.
