The Nigerian Senate has officially passed the BHCPF Amendment Bill (SB 886), marking a historic shift from 1% to 2% of the Consolidated Revenue Fund for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund. Championed by Senator Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, this expansion is more than just a policy update; it is a commitment to ensuring every Nigerian has access to quality, affordable healthcare.

What this means for you:

Strengthened PHCs: Improved facilities and staffing at the community level.

Maternal & Child Health: Better access to immunizations and safer deliveries.

Universal Coverage: A major step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all.

This is a win for our health, our families, and our future. Together, we are building a more resilient Nigeria.

The place of training and continuous capacity building across all sectors and spheres of career can not be overemphasised. This week in Borno and Adamawa states, over 70 women in elected and appointive positions across both states are being trained on inclusive governance and gender politics under the SEPIN-SUSI projects facilitated by the dRPC by the GIZ with support from the EU.

The sessions are highly interactive, ensuring that all participants are actively involved in the learning process, and pledges are made to effect learning and step down knowledge for a wider reach, propagating a behavioural and social shift in the direction of the future we see.

Today in Kano, the Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, Children & Persons with Special Needs, in collaboration with dRPC, held the inception meeting for the Grannies Network for Change (G-NEC) (The KAKA Project) 2026–2027.

This initiative places grandmothers, the “Kaka”, at the center of change, recognizing their influence in shaping family and community decisions. Across 10 communities in Kano and Jigawa, they will lead efforts to reduce gender-based violence and support girls to stay in school and complete their education.

By addressing economic barriers, harmful norms, and engaging both elders and youth, G-NEC is building a sustainable, community-driven response to GBV. Real change starts at home, and with those who hold influence within it.

As we reflect in the days following World Health Day 2026, the conversation on equitable access to healthcare remains as urgent as ever.

“There are husbands that don’t like their children to be immunized; they are zero-dose children… he will never accept it, and he will never listen… they are very strict, they never cooperate.” – VCM Panshekara

This statement reminds us that the challenge of zero-dose children goes beyond availability of vaccines. It speaks to deeper social and cultural dynamics—where household decision-making, trust, and beliefs shape whether a child receives life-saving immunization.

Despite ongoing efforts by government, civil society, and private sector actors, the question remains: why do zero-dose children still exist?

Insights from dRPC’s 2024 research in Kano State (https://drpcngr.org/zero-dose-children-in-kano-state-implications-for-social-and-behavioral-change-communication-validation/), presented at the RI Partners Meeting in April 2025, reveal that resistance is often tied to trust gaps, gender roles, and limited community engagement strategies that fail to reach key decision-makers.

Even after World Health Day, the call to action continues:
We must listen more.
We must engage differently.
We must build trust intentionally.

Because reaching every child requires reaching every household.
