Gender-based violence is any harmful act that violates human rights perpetrated against a person based on the socially ascribed differences between male and female.

Gender-based violence targets any person because of his/her gender but women are mostly affected because of the gender norms that label them as having an unequal power relation with men.

GBV includes but not limited to physical, sexual and psychological harm, including extortion, intimidation, bullying, coercion, suffering, deprivation of basic necessities of life, such as food, education, shelter and freedom within the family or the community.
