Commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Today, we join the global community to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day set aside by the United Nations to honor the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of persons with disabilities across the world.

At the Isaac Joshua Initiative for Disabilities (IJID), we use this occasion to reaffirm our commitment to promoting inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunities for all. This day serves as a powerful reminder that persons with disabilities are not defined by their limitations, but by their abilities, potential, and their remarkable capacity to inspire positive change.

As we commemorate this important day, we celebrate the achievements of persons with disabilities, acknowledge the challenges they continue to face, and advocate for a society where everyone—regardless of physical, sensory, or cognitive differences—is given the dignity, respect, and support they deserve.

Let us continue to work together towards a world that uplifts, empowers, and embraces all.

Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities!

Sign Language is one of those beautiful gifts we often overlook until we realise how powerful it truly is. It connects hearts, breaks barriers, and reminds us that EVERY HUMAN DESERVES TO BE HEARD, whether through sound or through the movement of the hands. Truly, SIGN LANGUAGE IS CRUCIAL — it carries dignity, inclusion, and love in every gesture.

Today, we’re taking another simple but meaningful step together…
👉 We’ll be learning the numerical numbers from 1–50 in Sign Language.
It’s easy, it’s fun, and it’s one more way to grow in understanding and compassion for the deaf community. Every number you learn is a new pathway to someone’s world.

Education for the Deaf Child!

Every child deserves the right to learn, thrive, and achieve their full potential — including children who are deaf or hard of hearing. One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is education.

Many people wonder how children with hearing impairments learn. The answer is simple: Sign Language.
Sign language is a unique and powerful form of communication that uses handshapes, facial expressions, and body movement to convey meaning. It bridges the gap and opens doors to literacy, knowledge, and empowerment.

As parents and guardians, you have a vital role to play. Do not deny your deaf child the opportunity to be educated. Instead, support them, encourage them, and guide them to use sign language as a tool for learning and personal growth. Education is not just about academics — it is about confidence, independence, and dignity.

At the Isaac Joshua Initiative for Disabilities (IJID), we are committed to promoting quality education and empowerment for persons with disabilities. Together, let us build a future where no child is left behind.

ICON OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
By; Odjuwu Isaac Joshua
Founder and President of IJID

Once a rustic child of humble years,
Drenched in sweat, with nights unfed,
He carved survival from timbered lands,
Where the cutlass sang, and the forest bled.

Bush master in his tender teens,
Rolling timbers through sinking mud,
He wrestled wood, both hard and soft,
Yet priced his hunger with honest blood.

Rubber tapped, the farmlands cleared,
Kernels washed, and fishes caught,
Casual toil, the bread he earned,
In silent pain, resilience taught.

But fate does bend to the steadfast heart—
The jungle boy, once left behind,
Now walks adorned in honour’s robes,
A noble name, by grace refined.

From Ugborhen Primary School he rose,
To Nsukka’s halls of learned streams,
Where Psychology shaped his sight,
And business built his noble dreams.

Comrade, Honourable, man of the people,
Your hands uplift, your voice believes,
That growth is born where love is sown,
And hope is reaped from what one gives.

Hon. Samuel Odafe Odjuwuederhie—
This crown you wear is richly earned.
A community’s torch, a beacon bright,
Your story speaks where hearts have yearned.

Congratulations on this golden award—
A seal of strength, of faith, of will.
Keep rising, keep building, keep giving more,
Your spirit flames, and climbs the hill.

Hon. Samuel Odafe Odjuwuederhie, IJID celebrates your humanitarian services to humanity.

The Unbreakable Spirit of Nicholas Blessing Okiemute (A visually impaired girl)

Okiemute, a young lady with physical disability, defied the odds of societal challenges and discrimination to achieve her dreams. Born into a world that often underestimated the potential of people with disabilities, Okiemute proved that with determination and resilience, she could overcome any obstacle.

Okiemute's journey began in a society where children with disabilities were often marginalized. However, her mother, who believed in her potential, fought for her right to education. With her mother's unwavering support, Okiemute enrolled in a local school, where she faced her first challenge: inaccessible infrastructure. Undeterred, she adapted and learned to navigate the school's environment, paving the way for her academic success.

As Okiemute progressed to secondary school, she encountered new challenges. Many of her peers and even some teachers doubted her abilities, citing her disability as a limitation. However, Okiemute's determination and hard work proved them wrong. She excelled academically, developed a passion to pursue higher education, and became an inspiration to her peers. Done with secondary school, Okiemute enrolled for computer training and she got far reaching recognition because of her exceptional skills. She graduated from the computer class and proceeded with Jamb in her pursuit of tertiary institution.

Okiemute's pursuit of higher education was met with skepticism by some who believed that universities were not equipped to accommodate students with disabilities. However, she refused to be deterred. With the support of her family and her own unwavering resolve, Okiemute gained admission to a prestigious tertiary institution, Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State, where she is studying Guidance and Counselling. Okiemute is presently in 300 level. Despite the challenges she faced, she thrive, becoming a role model to her sighted friends in her community.

Is there any lesson in the life story above?

PRESS RELEASE

Immediate Implementation of Delta State Disability Law Urged

Date: July 26, 2025
Issued by: Isaac Joshua Initiative for Disabilities (IJID)

The Isaac Joshua Initiative for Disabilities (IJID) is calling on the Delta State Government and relevant stakeholders to take urgent steps toward the full implementation of the Delta State Protection of Persons with Disabilities Law, which was passed by the State House of Assembly on March 12, 2024.

The enactment of this law was a commendable milestone aimed at promoting the rights, welfare, and inclusion of persons with disabilities across Delta State. However, over a year since its passage, the lack of concrete implementation continues to leave more than 130,000 persons with disabilities in Delta State vulnerable to systemic discrimination, neglect, and socio-economic exclusion.

From employment exclusion despite their qualification to being sidelined in official spaces, individuals with disabilities continue to face significant challenges in their quest for survival and dignity. Deep-seated societal norms, stereotypes, and infrastructural barriers remain unaddressed, making it difficult for persons with disabilities to access basic opportunities and services.

We are calling on the Delta State Government, traditional rulers, elder statesmen, and civil society actors to awake to the plight of persons with disabilities in Delta State. The law is a powerful tool, but without implementation, it is nothing more than a promise left unfulfilled. Now is the time for action."

IJID urges the government to:

Establish and fund the Disability Rights Commission as outlined in the law

Launch a state-wide awareness campaign on the rights of persons with disabilities

Ensure accessibility of public buildings, transportation, education, and health services

Involve persons with disabilities in policy-making and governance processes

At Isaac Joshua Initiative for Disabilities, we believe that a truly inclusive Delta State is possible—and that it begins with honoring the rights of every citizen, regardless of ability. We call on all stakeholders to join in building a society where no one is left behind.

Tribute from the Isaac Joshua Initiative for Disabilities (IJID)
In Memory of President Muhammadu Buhari (1942–2025)
Former Military Head of State and Democratic President of Nigeria

We at the Isaac Joshua Initiative for Disabilities (IJID) join the nation in mourning the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a statesman whose leadership has left an enduring impact on Nigeria. As tributes pour in from across the country and beyond, we choose to honor his legacy by reflecting on his contributions to the advancement of disability inclusion in Nigeria.

President Buhari’s administration took significant strides in protecting the rights and promoting the welfare of persons with disabilities in Nigeria. His key contributions include:

1. Signing the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018
This landmark legislation marked a turning point in the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, outlawing discrimination and mandating equal access to opportunities.

2. Establishment of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (2020)
Under his leadership, this commission was inaugurated to implement the provisions of the Disability Act and coordinate national efforts to improve the lives of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

3. Inclusive Provisions in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), 2021
The PIA, signed into law by President Buhari, incorporated notable clauses that recognized and promoted the inclusion of persons with disabilities in host communities:

Section 251(3)(a.i.b) mandates the consultation and consideration of the needs of women, youths, persons with disabilities, and community leaders.

Section 242 encourages inclusive representation on the Board of Trustees of Host Community Development Trusts, ensuring persons with disabilities have a seat at the table.

These actions reflect a genuine commitment to fostering accessibility, representation, and equal opportunity for all Nigerians, regardless of physical ability.

As we bid farewell to President Muhammadu Buhari, we remember him not only as a leader and patriot but also as an advocate for inclusion. May his legacy continue to inspire greater equity and justice in our society.
