FROM CONSENSUS TO CORONATION

Consensus was introduced into Nigeria’s electoral process as a peaceful alternative to bitter and expensive party primaries. Under the Electoral Act, parties may adopt direct primaries or consensus arrangements to produce candidates. Unfortunately, what should promote unity is increasingly becoming a tool for political imposition.

Today, many party leaders announce “consensus candidates” long before consultations even begin. Aspirants are pressured to step down, delegates are sidelined, and party members are denied the opportunity to make choices. That is not consensus; it is controlled democracy.

Real consensus in democratic societies is built on consultation, negotiation, and voluntary agreement. In countries like South Africa and Germany, parties only adopt consensus after extensive internal consultations. In the United Kingdom and United States, party members still retain the right to challenge or vote where consensus fails.

Democracy is not about avoiding contests at all costs; it is about allowing participation and respecting the will of the majority. Once a few political elites begin deciding candidates for everyone, parties gradually become private empires rather than democratic institutions.

The solution is simple: consensus should only stand where all aspirants freely agree. Where disagreements remain, parties should return to transparent primaries instead of forcing unity.

Nigeria’s democracy cannot grow if internal party democracy continues to shrink. If political parties replace consultation with imposition, consensus may no longer strengthen democracy, it may simply contradicts it!

Dino Melaye’s bold outfit at the ADC event speaks louder than words. An ex-lawmaker choosing spectacle over statesmanship.

Where public office once demanded dignity and measured presence,
this display blurs the line between influence and entertainment, reminding us that true class isn’t loud, it’s composed.

🇳🇬 BUDGET SIGNED, BUT QUESTIONS REMAIN…

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially signed the 2026 Appropriation Bill into law, setting the tone for government spending in the year ahead. The budget emphasizes infrastructure, security, and economic stabilization—but not without raising eyebrows.

💰 Highlight:
“Big Budget, Bigger Promises—But Will Nigerians Feel the Impact?”

One of the most debated inclusions is the massive allocation for the proposed *Integrated Gas, Power, and High-Speed Rail Project*, reportedly valued at over $200 billion in long-term projections. Critics question its feasibility, transparency, and timing, especially amid pressing economic challenges.

📊 While the administration insists this is a bold step toward economic transformation, many Nigerians are asking: *Is this ambition or overreach?*

Sadly so!

There is a quiet crisis unfolding daily in Abuja, quiet not because it is small, but because those in power have chosen not to hear it. It is the sound of thousands of Nigerians stranded at bus stops before dawn. It is the anger of workers watching half their salaries disappear into transport fares. It is the exhaustion of a city that was planned for order but now runs on chaos.

A report by Sahara Reporters alleges that the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate spent ₦6.8 million on just 20 litres of groundnut oil—raising serious concerns about public spending and procurement integrity.

The National Assembly should request full procurement documents, summon responsible officials, and mandate a forensic audit. If confirmed, enforce sanctions and recover funds—while strengthening procurement oversight across MDAs.
