SEGEI empowers adolescent girls and young women through education, mentorship, and life skills development. We nurture girls to be strong from the inside out. SEGEI envisions an equitable world where every girl and woman feels supported and empowered to reach her full potential. We believe in the power of girls and women working collaboratively to achieve success. Our Key Focus Areas:

In Session 7 of Global Girl Leadership Academy, our girls discovered that setting a goal is only the first step, understanding why you set it is what actually carries you to the finish line.

Using a exercise called the WHY Ladder, the girls asked themselves “Why?” repeatedly, climbing down past surface-level answers until they hit something deeply personal. That final discovery is their Strong WHY.

Goals can be hard to achieve, and setbacks might be inevitable. But on the days when energy is low and quitting feels tempting, a strong WHY steps in as their inner anchor. It reminds them of what’s at stake and gives them the resilience to keep going.

Today, on International Youth Day, we celebrate young people in all their diversity.

Young people may grow up in different communities, face different challenges, and walk very different paths, but many of their aspirations remain the same: to learn, to thrive, to be heard, to have opportunities, and to build lives they can be proud of.

At Strong Enough Girls Empowerment Initiative (SEGEI), we believe that where a young person comes from should never determine how far they can go. This is why we continue to invest in education, mentorship, skills development, and opportunities that enable girls and young women to realise their potential.

Today, we celebrate every young person pursuing a dream and we recommit ourselves to creating a world where those dreams have room to grow.

*When purpose meets a plan.*

In Session 6 of the Global Girl Leadership Academy (GGLA), our girls learned how to turn their dreams into action by exploring the power of SMART goals. Through interactive discussions, practical exercises, and a fun SMART Goals Bingo activity, they discovered that meaningful change begins with clear, intentional, and achievable steps.

Building on their reflections about purpose from the previous session, the girls shared their personal goals, encouraged one another, and learned that while every dream starts with an idea, achieving it requires a plan.

At SEGEI, we believe that when girls are equipped with the right tools to set goals and pursue them with confidence, they become empowered to create lasting change in their lives and communities.

We’re halfway through phase 1 of this exciting pilot program. Stay tuned for more of our girls in action!

It can change the life of a girl like T**i.

At age 10, continuing her education felt uncertain until she came into the SEGEI Scholarship Program. Since then, T**i has stayed in school, completed her secondary education, and today is studying Banking and Finance at a University in Nigeria

T**i's journey reminds us that when thousands of people give a little, girls gain something priceless: the opportunity to stay in school and shape their own futures.

What does meaningful partnership look like?

As we prepare for the final session of the EVOLVE Girls Summer Lab, we sat down with Mrs. Elizabeth Chung, Founder & Executive Director of the Asian American Center of Frederick (AACF) Asian American Center of Frederick, to reflect on why she said “yes” to this collaboration.

At SEGEI, we believe the best youth programs aren’t designed for young people, they’re designed with communities and in response to what young people themselves say they need.

This journey began with a simple conversation. We asked Mrs. Chung, “After more than two decades serving Frederick County, what are the greatest challenges facing our youth?” She pointed us to a 2024 community needs assessment that captured the voices and experiences of immigrant and first-generation young people.

We listened. We learned. Then we co-created.

That’s how the EVOLVE Girls Summer Lab was born: not from assumptions, but from community evidence, trusted partnerships, and a shared commitment to building systems where every girl has the opportunity to thrive.

Because meaningful youth engagement starts with listening. And lasting change happens when communities, young people, and organizations lead together.

“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.”
— Malala Yousafzai 💜

This past weekend at the EVOLVE Girls Summer Lab, we challenged our girls to find their voice and discover the leader within.

Inspired by Malala Yousafzai’s Malala Fund powerful 2013 address to the United Nations, we explored what it means to lead with courage, conviction, and purpose. Through team challenges, conversations about leadership, and a fun icebreaker focused on learning each other’s names, the girls discovered that leadership begins with connection—and that every voice matters.

One of the highlights of the day was presenting signed copies of Adannia, a memoir by our founder, Onyinye Edeh-Vincent , to three girls who have consistently demonstrated leadership, kindness, and initiative over the past three weeks. We hope these books remind them that their own stories have the power to inspire others.

We closed the session by standing together and declaring:

💜 My voice matters.
💜 I am confident.
💜 I communicate with courage.
💜 I lead with kindness.
💜 I was created on purpose, for a purpose.

Next Saturday is our final Summer Lab session, where we’ll celebrate the incredible journey these girls have taken together. Parents, we can’t wait to celebrate with you! 🎉

Meet Ireoluwa.

Like many families, Ireoluwa's family experienced an unexpected financial setback when her father lost his job. Despite her parents' determination to keep all four of their children in school, paying school fees became increasingly difficult.

The SEGEI Scholarship helped bridge that gap, giving Ireoluwa the peace of mind to focus on her studies without the fear of being sent home.

Now, Ireoluwa has written her WAEC and is excited about what comes next. In her words: "I am deeply grateful to SEGEI for believing in me and making my education possible."

Ireoluwa's story reflects the reality of many families. Parents are doing everything they can, yet rising costs mean difficult choices. Very often, the girl child is the one whose education is put on hold.

The Next 100 Campaign exists to ensure that financial hardship does not determine whether a girl gets an education.
