A Formal Address to the People of Nigeria
By Saminu Umar
My fellow Nigerians,
I extend this message to all citizens of our great nation — those in government and those in opposition, to the leadership at the highest levels, and to every ordinary citizen who calls this country home.
Nigeria, our beloved green and white nation, is richly blessed. We are a country of over 200 million people, endowed with vast natural resources — from petroleum to agriculture, livestock, and solid minerals. Beyond these, we possess something even greater: a population filled with intelligence, resilience, talent, and a deep historical and cultural heritage.
Yet, despite these immense blessings, we must ask ourselves a difficult but necessary question: why do we continue to struggle to build a nation that reflects the greatness we are capable of? Why do we forget that the responsibility for shaping our future ultimately lies with us?
Particularly in the North, where many of us are guided by faith and a long-standing religious tradition, there is much to reflect upon. History reminds us that even a small group, grounded in truth and conviction, can overcome great challenges. This should inspire us to examine our actions and renew our commitment to justice and righteousness.
We must remember that injustice can never prevail over truth. As citizens, we should strengthen our resolve, do our part with sincerity and dedication, and entrust the rest to God. Leadership may come and go, and political figures may rise and fall, but divine justice remains constant and unwavering.
To our leaders, including , this is a moment for reflection and responsibility. Power is transient, and history has shown that the will of the people cannot be ignored indefinitely. Governance must be rooted in fairness, accountability, and genuine concern for the welfare of the people.
We are reminded of leaders who once held power, such as , and how time inevitably moves forward. This serves as a lesson that leadership is a trust, not a permanent possession.
To the youth of this nation, I urge you to be vigilant. Do not allow yourselves to be used as instruments of conflict or division by those pursuing personal or political gain. Your lives — and the well-being of your families — are far too valuable to be placed at risk.
Finally, to all Nigerians: we must not become indifferent to the suffering around us. A nation cannot progress when its people lose concern for one another. Let us awaken our sense of responsibility, unity, and compassion.
I firmly believe that Nigeria will overcome its challenges. With collective effort, sincerity, and faith, a better future is not only possible — it is inevitable.
May we all play our part in building the Nigeria we desire.
Thank you.
May Allah accept it.
