Happy World Wetlands Day! 💧🌿
Did you know? Nigeria has 17 Ramsar Sites covering precisely 1,077,468 hectares of wetlands of international importance, from the Lake Chad Basin to the Lower Niger floodplains. Yet, these protected sites represent only a fraction of Nigeria’s wetlands, which are estimated to span several million hectares, with many critical ecosystems still outside formal protection.
This is important to us at SproutBud because we work at the intersection of ecosystem restoration, extreme heat management, and community-led, tech-enabled climate solutions to protect wetlands, cool vulnerable communities, and strengthen local resilience.
Simple actions we must prevent:
• Dumping plastic and waste into rivers and wetlands
• Sand filling, drainage, and unregulated land reclamation
• Bush burning and deforestation around wetland areas
• Pollution from untreated sewage, oil, and chemicals
Protect wetlands. Value wetlands. Act for our future. 🌍💙
