Skill acquisition can change a life — but only when it’s practical, dignified, and sustainable.

Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the 16 Days of Activism. Despite progress, violence against women and girls remains widespread.

Globally, 1 in 3 women experience violence. Digital violence is also rising, with 16%–58% of women affected by online harassment, abuse, and other harmful behaviours.

In Nigeria, the 2018 NDHS shows that 31% of women aged 15–49 have experienced physical or sexual violence; 9% experienced sexual assault, and 24% physical violence. Child marriage remains high, with 19% of girls married before 18 and 43% married by 18. FGM prevalence stands at 20%.

As we begin the 16 Days of Activism, we must continue speaking out and taking action to end all forms of violence—offline and online.

Across Nigeria, millions of girls and women are paying more for menstrual pads — not because production costs suddenly increased, but because a 7.5% VAT is added to every pack, treating menstrual products like luxury goods.

For families already navigating hardship, this tax makes a basic necessity unaffordable.
VAT isn’t just a number on a receipt —
it’s a silent barrier that pushes girls out of school, deepens stigma, and forces unsafe menstrual practices.

At EEN Foundation, we believe menstrual health is a matter of dignity, equity, and human rights.
No girl should have her future shaped by a tax on her biology.

That is why we are joining national voices calling for:

1️⃣ Zero VAT on menstrual products

Pads should be accessible to every girl and woman — not priced like a luxury.

2️⃣ Stronger government commitment to Menstrual Health in the national budget

Nigeria needs a dedicated Menstrual Health budget line to ensure sustained access, education, and dignity for all.

Menstruation is not a luxury.
Pads are not luxury goods.
And period poverty is not inevitable — it is a policy problem that can be solved.

EEN Foundation stands for access, dignity, and justice.
We stand with every girl whose dreams are interrupted by affordability barriers.
And we stand firm in calling for fiscal policies that protect—not punish—those who need care the most.

Let’s demand a Nigeria where menstrual dignity is a right, not a privilege.
