KAURU, KADUNA: WE PROMISED TO COME BACK, AND WE DID.
Last year, we came to Kauru, Kaduna State, with a simple mission: to empower women and young people with practical skills that could create opportunities, strengthen livelihoods and give people the confidence to build something for themselves.
We trained women in tailoring, bag making, soap making, antiseptic production, air freshener production and other cleaning products, alongside practical lessons on financial literacy, marketing and how to position and sell their products.
Many of them came with nothing but the willingness to learn, and they left with knowledge, confidence and skills they could take home and turn into a livelihood.
Before the programme, we opened applications for our empowerment initiative, and over 200 people applied.
That number meant something to us.
It showed us the willingness to learn.
It showed us the desire to do more.
It showed us that people were ready for an opportunity to build something for themselves.
From those applications, we were able to train 20 women in tailoring and bag making, while 70 women were trained in soap making, antiseptic production, air fresheners and other cleaning products.
And the story did not end there.
On our return to Kauru this year, another 20 women were selected to continue their training through our newly established centre.
And we are not stopping there, because the applications and interest continue to come in.
But beyond the training, something else happened.
We listened.
We saw the needs of the community.
We visited their Primary Healthcare Centre and saw the condition it was in. The pharmacy was virtually empty, and the needs were overwhelming.
Standing there, we made a promise: We will come back.
Life happened. There were responsibilities, challenges and so many things competing for our attention. But a promise made to a community should not be forgotten simply because life gets busy.
So, from 25th–28th August 2026, by the grace of Allah, the HalHad Foundation team returned to Kauru.
And the welcome we received reminded us exactly why we had to come back.
The women were genuinely happy to see us again. They shared their experiences and gave us beautiful feedback about how much the training they received last year had helped them in their livelihoods.
Hearing that what we taught them had gone beyond the classroom, that the knowledge had become useful in their everyday lives and had contributed to their livelihoods, was one of the most rewarding parts of returning.
This time, we continued the empowerment journey.
The women received machines and resources to help them put their skills into practice and continue building sustainable livelihoods. We also supported the Primary Healthcare Centre with essential drugs to help replenish some of what was missing.
Was everything perfect? No.
One of our biggest challenges was finding a suitable training centre. The community needed a proper and conducive space where people could learn comfortably, but finding one was difficult. We eventually had to use an alternative space that was far from ideal.
But we chose not to let an imperfect environment stop the work.
Because sometimes, impact does not begin with perfect conditions.
Sometimes, you simply start with what you have And Kauru reminded us of that, Kauru should not be ignored.
Behind the challenges is a community filled with incredibly talented, hardworking and resilient people.
Women who want to work.
Young people who want opportunities.
Families who deserve better access to healthcare.
People who do not need pity, they need access, resources, opportunities, support and people willing to stand with them.
This programme may have ended, but the work has not. This is only the beginning.
We will continue to check in.
We will continue to listen.
We will continue to support where we can.
We will continue to connect them to opportunities.
And most importantly, we will continue to remind them that they have not been forgotten.
And today, I want to say a very special thank you to our Mama, our Founder, Halimat Sadiya Hadi
Even when her health was not at its strongest, she still showed up.
She could have chosen to stay back. She could have allowed the circumstances to become an excuse.
But she came.
She stood with the team.
She stood with the women.
She showed up for the community.
And sometimes, leadership is not about making grand speeches.
Sometimes, leadership is simply showing up when it is difficult to show up.
Thank you, Mama, for continuing to lead with compassion, courage and humanity.
And to our my incredible team, thank you.
Thank you for travelling.
Thank you for staying.
Thank you for pushing through the challenges.
Thank you for giving your time and energy.
Thank you for choosing humanity even when it was not convenient.
There is no success without collaboration.
There is no meaningful impact without people willing to give their time, resources, skills and hearts.
Thank you for coming out stronger.
Thank you for staying in Kaduna and doing this work.
Thank you for choosing humanity.
To the women of Kauru:
Keep going.
Keep learning.
Keep building.
Keep believing.
We promised to come back And we did.
But we are not done yet, Kauru, this is only the beginning.
With love,
HalHad Foundation
