Topic: EDUCATION
What is Education?
The term Education has been defined by different notable scholars. We cannot infer that the term used by a particular scholar is more suitable than that used by another. Therefore, to have a clearer understanding of the the term "education", we will take a look at one of it's most notable origins. The term "education" is derived from the following Latin words;
1. Educare: To bring-up, to Rear or to Nurish.
2. Educere: To Draw out, to Manifest or to Lead out.
3. Educo: To Lead Forth.
4. Educatum: The Act of Teaching, Instructing or Training.
Therefore one can infer that Education is the process of Acquiring knowledge, Developing skills, as well as shaping Values and Character through schooling (formal) or informal learning process/experiences.
For some school of thought, education simply represents a formal learning process (schooling), therefore they do not recognize the informal learning sector as an aspect of education.
Taking a closer look at the origin of the term education, one will understand that education cut across every strata of learning. Education can be acquired through the formal sector(organize school system) or through the informal sector such as "Vocation", as well as other life experiences.
KEY AREAS OF EDUCATION
1. Knowledge Acquisition: Be it formal or informal learning system, one thing that defines education is the possibility of teaching/learning new facts, Acquiring new knowledge as well as new information/ideas.
