Dear Healthcare Worker,

Maintain a high index of suspicion. This “awareness and concern for potentially serious underlying and unseen injuries or illness” can protect you from infectious diseases like Lassa Fever.

Tuberculosis (TB) affects adults and has a devastating impact on children. This is because, for children, the signs and symptoms often go unnoticed or are mistaken for other common illnesses. As a result, children are more likely to die from TB than adults.

Here is how we are supporting the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme to improve TB case detection among children and reach zero TB deaths in Nigeria.

What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?

To understand AMR, let us first define antimicrobials. Antimicrobials are medicines used to prevent and treat infections caused by germs in humans, animals, and plants.

Examples include:

a. Antibiotics: Treat bacterial infections, e.g., tuberculosis.

b. Antivirals: Treat viral infections, e.g., cold sores.

c. Antifungals: Treat fungal infections, e.g., ringworm.

d. Antiparasitics: Treat parasitic infections, e.g., malaria.

AMR occurs when these medicines lose their effectiveness against the germs they were designed to combat, posing a serious threat to global health.

Individual health.
Family health.
Communal health.
National health.

This is our hope for Nigeria. And this can happen when we:

✅ Eat nutritious food.

✅ Space births so the mother recovers after each delivery, and children can get the best care as they grow.

✅ to from germs and disease-carrying organisms like mosquitoes to prevent malaria and yellow fever.

✅ Check ourselves when we have persistent coughs to prevent tuberculosis.

✅ Test every fever and treat them based on the recommendations of trained healthcare workers.

✅ Keep our food, clothes, body, animals, and environment clean.

✅ And adopt health-seeking behaviors across all areas of our lives.

Question:
What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?

Answer:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) happens when germs—such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites—evolve over time and become resistant to the medicines designed to kill them. This means that these drugs can no longer eliminate the germs effectively.

As a result, the germs continue to thrive in the body, causing illness. Infections become harder—or even impossible—to treat, leading to the spread of diseases, more severe health conditions, and, in some cases, death.

AMR is a serious threat that requires global action to prevent its consequences.

Olonite Michael, or "Baba Lassa" as he is fondly called, is a survivor of Lassa fever and has become an advocate for preventing, detecting, and treating the disease in his community in Ayede-Ogbese, Ondo State, Nigeria.

Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria strengthened Baba Lassa's capacity to promote healthy behaviors, including seeking prompt care for all fevers. He now uses his patent and proprietary medicine store and community engagement to reach people with critical information about preventing Lassa fever.

We desire that you continue to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety and health of you, your family, and everyone you love.

One way to do this is by cleaning your environment. A clean environment stops the spread of some diseases-carrying organisms.

Take that necessary step to clean your environment!
