What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?
To understand AMR, let us first define antimicrobials. Antimicrobials are medicines used to prevent and treat infections caused by germs in humans, animals, and plants.
Examples include:
a. Antibiotics: Treat bacterial infections, e.g., tuberculosis.
b. Antivirals: Treat viral infections, e.g., cold sores.
c. Antifungals: Treat fungal infections, e.g., ringworm.
d. Antiparasitics: Treat parasitic infections, e.g., malaria.
AMR occurs when these medicines lose their effectiveness against the germs they were designed to combat, posing a serious threat to global health.
