International Day of Education 2026

The 2026 International Day of Education theme is *The power of youth in co-creating education*

Date: January 24,

it focuses on empowering young people as active partnersโ€”not just beneficiariesโ€”in shaping, designing, and governing inclusive and future-ready education systems.
Key Aspects of the 2026 Theme:
Youth as Co-Creators: Recognizing young people as essential agents of change in achieving quality education.
Active Partnership: Shifting from designing education for youth to with them.
The highlights of this theme is focusing on student participation in policymaking.
Reimagining Learning: Emphasizing the need for modern, relevant, and inclusive education that meets the aspirations of the younger generation.

This theme encourages a shift in perspective to include young voices in educational governance, from school-level decisions to international policy.
International Day of Education 2026 celebrates the power of youth as
Although progress has been made in involving young people and students in global decision making in education, much more needs to be done

As parents, the youths / children must be involved in making their decisions

Everyday

January 26 is a date that carries deep pain and ongoing harm for First Nations peoples.

In recognition of this truth, IWDA has chosen and continues, not to recognise January 26 as a public holiday. This decision was first made by our staff in 2021.

This position reflects our acknowledgment that the date marks the beginning of a violent colonial invasion and a system of dispossession whose impacts continue today.

From the 1888 boycott of the centenary of British invasion to the first Day of Mourning march in Sydney in 1938, First Nations Peoples have long and clearly affirmed that January 26 is . We stand in solidarity with this enduring history of resistance and resilience.

We encourage our non-Indigenous followers and partners to reflect on how they mark this day, and to consider joining us in not treating it as a public holiday.
