Today marks the first-ever International Day of Play! Play is crucial for early childhood care and education, providing a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
Play isn't just fun; it's a universal language that helps children build relationships, develop resilience, and overcome challenges. By integrating play into education, we enhance cognitive, social, and emotional skills, ensuring that children thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Currently, 83% of children in countries with free pre-primary education are developmentally on track, compared to 66.6% in countries without this provision. This highlights the importance of investing in early childhood care and education (ECCE) to ensure equitable opportunities for all children.
UNESCO, alongside partners, is committed to promoting play-based learning and advocating for increased investment in ECCE. The Tashkent Declaration from the 2022 World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education calls for governments to allocate at least 10% of their education expenditures to pre-primary education. To learn more, stay tuned for the launch of the Global Report on Early Childhood Care and Education on 17 June.
Letโs acknowledge the power of play and work towards a future where every child can learn, grow, and reach their full potential! ๐๐ถ๐
