Therapist’s Thoughts Thursday
Last week, I had a session with a young man who everyone calls the “funny guy.” Always cracking jokes, always keeping the mood light. But beneath that humor was deep anxiety he never showed.

Many Nigerians use laughter as a shield, especially men. We joke through the pain until it becomes part of the act.

Mental health isn’t weakness, it’s awareness. Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is stop pretending everything is fine.

Working nonstop doesn’t make you strong, it makes you human — and humans need rest.
When exhaustion becomes your normal, burnout is calling.
It starts with tiredness, slips into detachment, and can end in breakdown if ignored.

Your work should not cost your mental health.
Let’s talk about burnout, balance, and building healthier work habits.

During one of my sessions, a young woman told me she felt like she was living for everyone else, her parents, her pastor, and her friends. Every decision she made came with someone else's approval stamp. The weight of trying to please everyone left her anxious, constantly doubting herself.

We worked on one thing, reclaiming her ownership. I told her, “Peace starts when you stop outsourcing your decisions.” Slowly, she began saying no without guilt, making choices that reflected her, not others’ expectations.

A few months later, she said something that stuck with me: “For the first time, I feel like I’m living my own life.”

That is what this week’s mantra means, I own my choices, my mind, and my peace. You get to write your story.

A few months ago, I worked with a young man who was constantly on edge. Every little thing stressed him, Lagos traffic, work pressure, family expectations. He said, “I just want peace, but everything around me is chaos.”

We started small, deep breathing, quiet mornings, learning to pause before reacting. One day he came back and said, “You know what, peace no dey outside. E start from me.''

That line stuck with me. Because truly, peace begins with you.

Think of someone you’ve lost. If you had just one more conversation, what would you say to them today?

Grief runs deep, especially in a culture where we’re told to “be strong.” But honouring those we’ve lost isn’t about silence, it’s about remembering. It’s about choosing life in their memory.

Honour them by living fully. By loving loudly. By staying present.

Some time ago, a young man came to me looking completely drained. Life had pushed him so hard that he felt like giving up was the only option. At first, he barely spoke, just sat in silence. But slowly, with each session, the words began to come out.

One day, he looked at me and said, “Therapy saved my life.”
That sentence has never left me.

Too often, people wait until they are hanging by a thread before reaching out. But healing doesn’t have to start at rock bottom. You don’t need to carry the load alone.

Let’s talk straight. In Nigeria, many people turn to alcohol, drugs or pills as a way to escape stress, heartbreak or the constant hustle pressure. But what starts as ‘just to cool my head’ can quietly turn into dependence. And here’s the hard truth, addiction doesn’t just affect your health, it can push someone closer to suicidal thoughts.

This is not about weakness or moral failure. It’s pain showing up in another form, a cry for help that often goes unheard.

If you or someone you care about is caught up in this struggle, please know support exists. You don’t have to carry it alone.

Our inbox is always open. Reach out today, let’s talk it out.

During a session, a young man shared how he had been battling alcohol use since losing his brother. Each day felt like a blur, and he often said he could not see the point of living. But one day, after a relapse, he looked at himself in the mirror and whispered, “I choose life. I choose healing.”

It was not magic, but those words became his anchor. Each time he slipped, he repeated them again. With support, he started small steps, attending groups, reconnecting with family, learning healthier coping strategies.

Today, he admits he still has tough moments, but choosing life and choosing healing daily keeps him grounded.

This mantra is not about denying pain, it is about reminding yourself that there is always something worth holding on to.

Being young in Nigeria is not small work. The pressure to succeed in school, meet family expectations, keep up with friends, and still figure out your future can feel like carrying a full load on your head with no rest.

For some young people, that weight becomes too heavy and starts showing up as deep sadness, hopelessness, or even thoughts of giving up. But here’s the truth: silence makes it worse. Talking about how you feel can be the first step to healing.

Your struggles are real, your feelings matter, and your life is important. You don’t have to carry it all alone.

Reach out today. We’re here to listen and to help.

How often do you check in on someone, really check in?
In the middle of the grind, it's easy to forget that connection is a lifeline.

Imagine the weight someone is carrying in silence. A simple "How are you?" could be the spark that shifts their day.

Today, send a message, make that call, or show up for someone who might need you more than they say. In this busy Naija life, we sometimes forget that a moment of kindness could save a life.

So, who’s on your mind today? Reach out. It might be the most important thing you do.
