When a partner controls, insults, or hits you, that’s not love, it’s abuse. The VAPP law protects survivors of domestic violence in Nigeria. Help is available through the police, Sexual Assault Referral Centres, and NGOs offering free support.
Speak out. Choose safety over silence.

Yesterday, MAFOYA Initiative paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Karu LGA, Barr. Abubakar Aliyu Madaki, to present our YASO – Young Advocates Speaking Out Against GBV campaign.
We are excited to share that the Chairman warmly received us and pledged his full support for the campaign across Karu communities.
This is a big step toward building a united front against Gender-Based Violence. Together, with leadership, community voices, and young advocates, we can create safer spaces for everyone in Karu LGA.

On Thursday, with support from Nigerian Women Trust Fund and Ford Foundation , Media & Advocacy for Youth Advancement took a bold step at Mararaba Market to confront the issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) head-on. Markets are not just centers of trade; they are vibrant communities where people gather, interact, and share values. That is why we chose the bustling Mararaba Market as the stage to spark meaningful conversations.

Through a thought-provoking play, we brought to life the hidden realities of GBV, its dangers, its impact on families, and its devastating effect on the community. The response was powerful. Traders, buyers, and passersby paused from their daily hustle to listen, watch, and reflect. Many nodded in agreement, others voiced their support, and together the marketplace echoed one resounding message: there is no place for abuse in our community.

This action was not just about awareness, it was about mobilization. By taking the message of safety and dignity to everyday spaces like the market, we are empowering people to recognize GBV, reject harmful norms, and stand up for survivors. Every conversation started, every head turned, and every pledge made that day was a step toward building a safer community for all.

Together, we are proving that change begins where people live, work, and gather.

Gender-Based Violence is not just “a private issue”. it is a CRIME.

The Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP) was created to protect survivors from domestic abuse, r**e, harmful traditional practices, and all forms of violence.

Under the VAPP law, survivors have the right to justice, protection, and support services, at no cost.
Perpetrators can and will be held accountable.

Your voice matters. The law is on your side. Together, we can end GBV.

It was truly inspiring to witness corps members at the NYSC office in Karu lend their voices to the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). During the outreach, they not only engaged with the conversations but also openly expressed their dissatisfaction with how survivors, especially women, are often silenced within our communities. Their reflections showed a deep understanding of the pain and injustice that comes with silencing survivors and normalizing abuse.

What stood out most was their resolve. These young people did not just listen, they took the call to action personally. They pledged to rise above the culture of silence and to use their platforms, voices, and influence to challenge harmful practices that perpetuate GBV. Their passion reflects a generation ready to drive real change.

From Karu Local Government to surrounding communities, these corps members are committing to stand up, speak out, and support survivors. Their collective voice sends a clear message: GBV is not just a private matter but a societal crisis that demands attention and action.

Yesterday, YASOS carried out a powerful outreach at the NYSC office in Karu, Nasarawa State, to sensitize corps members on the dangers of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). A drama performance became the highlight of the event, painting a vivid picture of the painful realities many women face in silence.

The play told the story of a young woman who entered into marriage with hopes of happiness but instead found herself in the hands of an abuser. She endured repeated abuse, both physical and emotional, while her pleas for help went unheard. Even when the authorities attempted to intervene, her husband dismissed the abuse as a “family matter.” Tragically, the culture of silence and denial cost her life. This drama gripped the attention of everyone present. Corps members listened and watched intently, absorbing every moment of the story. The atmosphere was heavy with emotion as the performance exposed the devastating consequences of ignoring or excusing violence..

At the close of the outreach, corps members stood in unity, pledging to lend their voices and take action against GBV. They recognized that silence allows abuse to thrive, but by speaking out and taking a stand, they could help bring about change in their communities. The outreach was not just an event, it was a call to action. Gender Based Violence is not a private issue, it is a societal crisis that demands collective responsibility.
Let’s all break the silence.
Let’s challenge harmful cultural norms.
Let’s speak up for survivors and support them.
