Ending Sexual and Gender-Based Violence: The Catholic Church Takes the Lead
At the 2026 Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Ede, Osun State, stakeholders of the Catholic Church and the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria are strengthening their commitment to tackling and eliminating Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Nigeria.
The conference featured the formal presentation of the Ford-funded SGBV project, which seeks to leverage the Social Teachings of the Church, as well as the Church’s extensive structures and networks, to promote awareness, advocate for behavioural and policy change, and contribute to a safer and more just society.
Reflecting on the event, Rev. Fr. George Ehusani said:
"We had a good outing at the ongoing CBCN Conference in Ede, Osun State, with the formal presentation today of the Ford funded ESGBV project - in which we shall capitalise on the ideals of the Social Teachings of the Church, and use the structures and networks of the Church for awareness campaigns as well as advocacy for behaviour and policy change. The President of the Conference, Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso, Fr Banjo, as well as Sister Cor Jesu (the Project Coordinator) all made a strong case in their presentations. Their inputs very well complemented my Keynote address for the occasion. At the end of the day, I believe that I satisfactorily addressed all the questions and concerns that the Bishops raised".
