+++ CALL FOR THE INCLUSION OF EDUCATION IN NIGERIA’s NATIONAL DETERMINED CONTRIBUTION (NDC)+++
As Nigeria prepares to submit its revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, Green Schools International Foundation urges the government to recognize education as a vital pillar in achieving the country’s climate goals.
Despite being acknowledged in Article 12 of the Paris Agreement and referenced in various climate negotiations since 1992, education has remained an overlooked sector in climate strategy development. Yet, education is fundamental to building a climate-resilient future. By integrating climate education into national policies, Nigeria can empower its youth, educators, and communities with the knowledge and skills needed to drive sustainable solutions.
Our Call to Action
We urge the Federal Government, policymakers, and key stakeholders to:
* Integrate Climate Education into Nigeria’s formal and informal education systems, ensuring it is accessible to all learners.
* Support Teacher Training on climate literacy to enhance knowledge transfer in schools.
* Encourage Youth-Led Climate Action by creating platforms for students to participate in climate resilience projects.
* Strengthen Collaboration between the education sector and climate-related ministries to ensure a cohesive and effective sustainability strategy.
