As part of this year’s Girls in ICT Day celebrations, PAGED Initiative in partnership with iT Central screened our documentary Buri Na at Mega School in Dutse, Jigawa; attended by MAP Girls Kano’s Sakeena Elyakub and Saadatu Abdullahi.

Sakeena opened with an introduction to PAGED Initiative and the story behind the film. After the screening, Saadatu led the girls through a discussion with questions like what did they notice? What moved them? What would they do differently for the girls around them?

The responses were honest and hopeful. Girls who had never encountered the barriers shown in the film left the room more aware, more grateful, and more determined. A teacher added her voice too, reminding the students that the girls on screen weren’t asking for much but a chance to learn.

The session wrapped up with a hands-on computer activity, because awareness is just the beginning.

“Visiting Maiduguri challenged my assumptions about safety, culture and daily life. Seeing how young women present themselves,
how perceptions around dignity and livelihood differ from Kano and Zaria, and witnessing a city that has known real hardship yet has people living their normal lives was truly eye-opening. That shift in my understanding is progress.”

“Coming to this workshop, I have gained more knowledge on how to approach this issue of reporting. I used to report without knowing that human interest is very important when it comes to things affecting girls, children and vulnerable people.”

“In the process of advocating for girls to believe in their future, I’ve learned to believe more deeply in mine. This journey has strengthened my voice, my resilience & my commitment to ensuring that no girl sees her age or marital status as a limitation and that is progress.”

On this World Press Freedom Day, we honour every journalist, reporter, and storyteller who risks everything to bring truth to light and amplify the voices the world too often ignores.

At PAGED Initiative, participatory media is at the heart of everything we do and none of it is possible without a free press.

To the women and men holding the pen, the mic, and the camera: we see you. We stand with you.

My First Line of Code 2026 💻💜🌍

We’re excited to be part of My First Line of Code 2026 in celebration of International Girls in ICT Day.

This impactful initiative will reach over 300 school girls across Kaduna, Kano, Dutse, and Malam Madori LGA in Jigawa State—creating space for young girls to explore coding, build confidence, and imagine new possibilities for their future.

We are proud to contribute to this experience through the screening of our short film, “BURI NA.”The film highlights the realities and barriers many girls face in accessing education, while encouraging reflection, gratitude, and a stronger commitment to learning.

By bringing this story into the room, we hope to spark important conversations; helping these girls not only see the value of the opportunities they have, but also inspiring them to become voices for others who are still left behind.

Earlier this month, we held our first Media Advocacy Project training with journalists.

The training focused on human interest storytelling and gender-sensitive reporting; giving media professionals the tools to drive participatory advocacy around re-entry into formal education for married adolescents, and the importance of 12 years of basic education for all, especially girls.

We remain committed to advancing girls’ rights to quality education, regardless of age or marital status. Through strong partnerships with the media, we are building a network of advocates who do more than tell stories. They shape conversations, influence perspectives, and drive real change.

Happy birthday Amaka 🎉 We wish you Joyful Growth this new year and beyond.
