"They are kidney failure patients who came out in Enugu yesterday " Okwuluora.

Dear imams and pastors, please try to organize a kidney screening event and invite a kidney care expert to educate the worshippers on the care of their kidneys. Kidney failure is on the increase in our society.

Dialysis Adequacy Is a Right, Not a Privilege!

It is sad to realize that only a few renal patients in Nigeria could achieve dialysis adequacy; in fact, maybe only 5%. Other patients are struggling to survive.

Dialysis adequacy entails prescribed dialysis sessions, proper access, perfect nutrition, suitable reverse osmosis for permeate water, etc.

Unfortunately, unlike patients abroad who enjoy subsidies for their treatment plans, those in Nigeria can barely get the needed help from the government, forcing most of them to have virtually zero life expectancy after diagnosis.

Abroad, patients enjoy three dialysis sessions a week, high blood flow because their access is patent and appropriate, ESAs for blood volume optimization, and lots more. However, in Nigeria, most patients can barely get one session a week, with low blood flow because of poor access (mostly through femoral catheters) and the inability to get ESAs, which usually leads to fatal complications.

Till this moment, patients are only entitled to six dialysis sessions covered by the health insurance, except for the few people who work in corporate organizations like CBN, NNPC, and others that enjoy free prescribed dialysis sessions.

I hope these patients get the help they deserve. A kidney failure diagnosis should not be tagged as the end of life.
