One question survivors of sexual assault are often asked is: “Why didn’t you fight back?”

But the focus should never be on what the survivor did or did not do. The focus should be on the person who chose to cause harm.

At FRED Nigeria, we believe in building communities where women and girls are safe, respected, and free from violence.

This starts with teaching our boys and men about consent, respect, accountability, and healthy relationships.

Sexual and gender-based violence affects everyone, and ending it requires everyone to play a role.

We can do better. We must do better.

World Humanitarian Day!

Today, FRED Nigeria commemorates World Humanitarian Day by celebrating the individuals and organisations working every day to protect lives, uphold dignity, promote rights, and create safer and more inclusive communities.

At Foundation for Resilient Empowerment and Development (FRED), we believe humanitarian action goes beyond responding to immediate needs. It is also about empowering people, protecting women and girls from violence, amplifying the voices of those often unheard, and creating opportunities for individuals and communities to thrive.

We honour every humanitarian worker, volunteer, advocate, community leader, and changemaker who continues to serve with compassion, courage, and commitment.

Together, we can build communities where everyone is treated with dignity, protected from violence, and allowed to thrive.

FRED Nigeria, we work across different thematic areas of development to improve the lives of individuals and communities, including preventing gender-based violence and promoting the rights and empowerment of women and girls. Through our work, we’ve come to understand that the way we tell stories matters.

Every day, we see reports of sexual and gender-based violence in the media. While these stories help raise awareness, they must also be told with care, dignity, and respect for survivors.

The media has the power to shape public understanding, influence attitudes, and inspire action. Responsible storytelling helps educate communities, challenge harmful norms, protect survivors, and encourage those affected to speak out and seek support.

Redefining Masculinity: A Key Step Toward Ending Violence Against Women and Girls

Violence against women and girls cannot be ended through laws and policies alone. Lasting change begins with transforming the beliefs and attitudes that shape how we view gender and relationships.

As education content creator Max Klymenko highlights, masculinity itself is not the problem. The issue lies in the harmful stereotypes that equate being a man with dominance, control, aggression, or emotional suppression. These expectations can contribute to unequal power dynamics and increase the risk of violence.

It’s time to redefine what strength truly means.

A strong man respects others. He listens. He shows empathy. He takes responsibility for his actions. He values equality and dares to stand against violence, even when it’s uncomfortable.

By teaching boys and engaging young men to embrace positive, healthy, and respectful expressions of masculinity, we can help build safer homes, stronger communities, and a future where women and girls can live free from fear and violence.

Redefining masculinity is not about changing who men are; it is about challenging harmful norms and creating space for healthier, more respectful ways of being.

From Survivor to Self-Reliance.

Every survivor deserves the opportunity to heal, rebuild, and thrive.

Sarah’s story shows what is possible when women and girls receive the right support, skills, and opportunities to create a better future.

After experiencing gender-based violence, Sarah was referred to the Foundation for Resilient Empowerment and Development (FRED) through and enrolled in the Program, implemented in partnership with . Through the program, she gained fashion design skills that have empowered her to create beautiful outfits, including skirts, blouses, kaftans, blazers, two-piece outfits, and children’s wear.

Today, Sarah is turning her skills into a source of income and a pathway toward economic independence.

Her journey reminds us that with empowerment and support, survivors can overcome challenges, rebuild their confidence, and achieve their dreams.
