CAN A NATION PRAY ITS WAY TO DEVELOPMENT—WITHOUT BUILDING, INVENTING AND WORKING?
The ongoing VDM–Apostle Arome controversy has opened a much bigger conversation about religion and Nigeria’s development.
Arome speaks of Nigeria’s spiritual calling and revival. VDM challenges the idea that prayer and spiritual revival should overshadow innovation, technology and practical nation-building.
But perhaps Nigeria needs both faith AND responsibility.
Pray—but also build.
Believe—but also innovate.
Go to church—but also acquire knowledge.
🇳🇬 Have faith—but demand competent leadership.
Trust God—but do the work required to develop the nation.
Religion should not become an excuse for passivity, just as development should not require Nigerians to abandon their faith.
And criticism should address ideas—not disabilities, personalities or personal identities. That distinction has also become part of the current debate.
A developed Nigeria will not be built by prayer alone—or by technology alone. It will be built by people who combine values, knowledge, hard work, accountability and action.
The real question is:
Can Nigerian religion inspire people not only to pray for a better nation—but to become the people capable of building one?
