This week we talked about things Nigerian women are told to keep quiet about.

"It's normal." "Just manage it." "When are you getting your body back?" Different phrases, same message: keep it to yourself.

Silence has never protected anyone. It's protected the systems that fail women.
AHERI will keep naming these realities, out loud, every week.

If any part of this week spoke to you , we see you.

When are you going to lose the weight?
Often one of the first things said to a woman after childbirth.

Research confirms it: pregnancy-related body changes predispose women to negative body image and in Nigeria, that pressure comes from everywhere. Family comments. "Bounce back" culture. Social media's curated version of recovery.

The cost isn't just discomfort. It's women hiding, skipping events, measuring themselves against a standard that has nothing to do with health.

Her body after childbirth isn't a project to fix. It's evidence of what she survived.

It's just cramps. Most of us have heard it.

But research on Nigerian women found more than half experience period pain severe enough to disrupt daily life missed school, missed work, pain pushed through in silence.

The problem isn't the pain. It's that we're taught to stay quiet about it.

AHERI believes menstrual health deserves to be taken seriously and not dismissed.

Postpartum depression is not weakness.
It's what happens when a woman's mental health is everyone's last priority.

Signs to know:
πŸŒ™ Feeling sad, empty, or hopeless most of the day
πŸŒ™ Feeling disconnected from your baby
πŸŒ™ Crying often β€” without knowing why
πŸŒ™ Feeling like you're not a good enough mother
πŸŒ™ Feeling anxious or unable to rest even when baby sleeps

If this sounds like you; you are not alone. This is medical. It deserves real support.

Studies across Nigeria show postpartum depression affects new mothers at rates as high as 1 in 3 in some regions, even higher.

Most cases go undiagnosed. Not because mothers aren't struggling but because postnatal checkups rarely screen for mental health at all.

"Support" often means being told to "be strong." Real support looks like: routine screening, safe spaces to say "I'm not okay," people who show up without judgment.

Maternal mental health isn't optional. It's essential.
