A new era begins in Imo State

A future where no one is priced out of their rights and where the path to justice is clear, affordable, and local is what many Nigerians seek. Unfortunately, the formal justice system has become a wall rather than a bridge due to high costs and procedural complexity. Our Community Justice Centre (CJC) in Imo State was founded to tear down those walls, ensuring that justice is not a luxury item, but a reachable reality for everyone.

To make this vision a permanent reality, last week, our Steering Committee held a meeting with the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, to sync our efforts with the Nigeria Police Force. This partnership aims to breathe new life into inactive Gender Units and establish a referral system where non-criminal matters are shifted from the police stations to skilled CJC mediators. The Commissioner enthusiastically embraced our proposal for joint capacity-building and improved response protocols, signaling a new era in Imo State where the police and the community work as one to ensure justice is not just served, but is felt by every citizen.

What happens when you stop designing justice for systems and start designing it for people?

When we first launched the Justice Innovation Lab (JIL) in Imo and Ogun States, we leaned into a radical theory: the most effective legal solutions don't always start in a courtroom, they emerge from the community.

By prioritizing people over processes, we saw firsthand how meaningful change happens when justice reflects everyday realities. This human-centered approach bridged the gap between complex legal hurdles and the average citizen, proving that when you design for trust, justice actually scales.

📍 Now, JIL is heading north.

We are officially implementing our model in Kaduna State. This April, our team conducted a deep-dive scoping session to listen, learn, and understand the local landscape. The findings were clear: in sensitive cases like domestic violence or financial disputes, trust is everything. We discovered that people are far more likely to turn to familiar, informal systems than formal legal channels.

🤝 Co-Creating the Future

Rather than replicating what worked elsewhere, we’re co-creating something that fits Kaduna’s unique context. At the heart of this is the plan to establish Community Justice Centres, innovative spaces designed to link formal legal structures with the trusted, informal systems people already rely on.

Justice isn't a "one size fits all" garment. It is a local service that requires local expertise. We are thrilled to partner with the people of Kaduna to co-design a system that truly works for everyone.

Imagine a community where a dispute over a boundary or a grazing path doesn't lead to fear, but to a conversation. In the "Aftercare Phase" of conflict resolution, we see the power of this shift: when farmers and herders sit together under the shade of the same trees to talk and cooperate, everyone benefits. 🤝

The Guidelines for the Prevention and Resolution of Land Conflicts are here to make that vision a reality 🌾🐄. They offer a roadmap for fair mediation and high-quality advice for common land disputes.

We officially launched the Guidelines for the Prevention and Resolution of Land Conflicts between Farmers and Herders across Benue, Plateau, Kaduna, and Katsina States an important milestone under the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) Programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The launch events brought together a diverse and influential group of stakeholders’ security agencies, legal practitioners, traditional and religious leaders all united in their commitment to finding sustainable, peaceful solutions.

In Benue State, dignitaries included representatives of the Och’Idoma, Dr. John Elaigwu Odogbo; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Fidelis Unongo; the Special Adviser on Internal Security, Chief Joseph Har; and the State Chairman of AFAN, Mr. Ernest Atoji, among other key officials.

Plateau State also recorded strong participation from high-level stakeholders and partners, including Alhaji Muhammad Nuru (former Chairman of MACBAN, Plateau Chapter), John Wuyep (Chairman of AFAN, Plateau State), Priscilla Ankut (Deputy Team Leader, SPRiNG Programme), and Nina Mason (Senior Conflict Advisor, UK High Commission).

In Kaduna State, notable attendees included the Chief Judge, Justice Muhammadu Lawal Bello; the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Sule Shu’aibu (SAN); Executive Directors from the Ministries of Justice and Agriculture; and traditional leaders across the state.

Katsina State saw participation from the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Fadila Muhammad Dikko (represented by A.L. Buhari), alongside key officials from the Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs.

The response from stakeholders was overwhelmingly positive. Many described the guidelines as a much-needed roadmap for lasting peace in communities frequently affected by farmer-herder conflicts.

Can we finally silence the land dispute crisis in Nigeria?

For decades, disputes over land and resources have been a silent storm brewing across our regions. From farmer-herder conflicts to boundary disagreements, these issues have often felt unsolvable even for the government.

Last week, we hosted a media parley to officially present the Guidelines for the Prevention and Resolution of Land Conflicts between Farmers and Herders in Benue, Plateau, Kaduna, and Katsina States.

The session brought together experts from the four states, researchers, partners and members of the media. It created a space for honest conversations about what is working, what needs to change, and how we can collectively respond to these conflicts in a more sustainable way.

One thing stood out clearly: solutions are more effective when they reflect local realities. These guidelines build on existing community practices, strengthening them with research and practical tools for:

✔️ Preventing conflicts before they escalate
✔️ Resolving disputes through dialogue and mediation
✔️ Supporting communities to heal and rebuild after conflict

The conversation also reinforced the powerful role of the media. Beyond reporting, journalists have the ability to shape narratives, promote accurate information, and support peacebuilding efforts.

This initiative was made possible under the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) Programme, with funding from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Justice is a Journey You Don’t Have to Walk Alone...

Our work in Ogun State continues to reaffirm a simple message: you do not have to walk the justice journey alone. Silence does not have to be the end of the story.

This commitment came to life during a recent market sensitization at Oke-Aje and New Market in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area. In collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, and Ibi Isadi frontline actors of the state, we engaged with more than 3,500 community members, sharing a powerful message: abuse is not a private family matter to be endured in silence. It is a violation of rights, and our justice system is equipped to respond.

Supporting this movement are the Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) in Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ilaro. These centres provide safe spaces where multidisciplinary teams offer medical care, trauma-informed counselling, and legal support. Every case is handled with care, dignity, and professionalism so survivors feel empowered rather than overwhelmed.
