🌱 International Day of Combating Desertification and Drought – June 17, 2026 🌱

Today, June 17, 2026, we join the global community in commemorating the International Day of Combating Desertification and Drought, a day dedicated to raising awareness about land degradation, desertification, and the urgent need for sustainable environmental practices.

In line with this year's commemoration, we reflect on the Environmental Awareness Campaign and Advocacy Program held on June 17, 2026, at the NYSC Local Government Secretariat, Lafia, Nasarawa State. The event equipped corps members with practical knowledge on tree nursery establishment, seedling management, and the vital role of afforestation in combating climate change and environmental degradation.

Resource person Mr. Christopher Ashe Bashayi demonstrated the processes involved in preparing nursery beds, treating soil, sourcing quality seeds, and nurturing saplings for successful transplantation. Corps members also participated in practical sessions involving the planting of mango, cashew, pear, coconut, and pride of Barbados seeds.

Also speaking at the event, Architect David highlighted the growing impact of climate change on rainfall patterns and encouraged everyone to plant trees in their communities as a lasting investment in environmental sustainability and future generations.

As we mark this important day, let us all commit to restoring degraded lands, planting more trees, conserving our environment, and taking meaningful action against desertification and drought.

🌳 One Tree Today, A Greener Tomorrow.

🌍 WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 🌱

Today, June 5th, 2026, Abundance of Hope Initiative proudly joins the global community in commemorating World Environment Day through an Environmental Awareness Campaign and Community Cleanup Exercise at Virtue City International Comprehensive Academy, Kabayi, Nasarawa State.

This year's theme, "Environmental Awareness Campaign and Community Cleanup," reminds us that protecting our environment begins with simple, intentional actions. Every clean-up effort, every tree planted, every piece of waste properly disposed of, and every environmental lesson shared contributes to a healthier and more sustainable future.

Together with students, staff, volunteers, and environmental advocates, we are taking practical steps to restore and beautify our surroundings while inspiring a culture of environmental responsibility.

As we celebrate today, let us remember that the Earth is our shared home. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the resources we depend on must be protected for future generations.

💚 Small actions today create a greener tomorrow.

🌱 Working Towards a Greener Lafia

The ATHI team recently paid a visit to the Faculty of Agriculture at Federal University Lafia to strengthen collaboration following the Memorandum of Understanding signed on October 6, 2025.

During the meeting, the Dean of the Faculty reaffirmed the university’s commitment to supporting tree planting and fodder development initiatives. A space has already been provided for demonstration activities, with plans to beautify the faculty environment with trees and well-laid grasses in the coming rainy season.

Speaking on the initiative, the President of the Young Farmers Club Lafia highlighted that the project aims to make Lafia greener through climate and environmental education, capacity-building training, reforestation, and the promotion of good agricultural practices.

With over 50 members ready to support the program, the Young Farmers Club expressed their willingness to collaborate and align with the project’s goals despite previous challenges faced by farmers.

Together, we are building a sustainable and greener future for Lafia. 🌿

Advancing Climate-Smart Agriculture Through Strategic Collaboration

As part of its advocacy and partnership engagement, Abundance of Hope Initiative (AHI) is strengthening efforts to promote climate-smart agriculture as a key response to food insecurity and the growing impacts of climate change.

Key focus areas discussed include capacity building on climate-smart farming practices, robust advocacy and awareness creation, and policy engagement to support the adoption of sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural approaches.

Ongoing research initiatives—such as climate-related experiments and water-level testing—were highlighted as essential tools for driving evidence-based solutions that enhance agricultural productivity and resilience.

The engagement also emphasized youth participation, scholarship opportunities, curriculum development, and stronger institutional synergy to support long-term impact.

These efforts reflect a shared commitment to building resilient food systems, empowering communities, and advancing climate-smart agriculture as a pathway to sustainable food security.
