🌱 International Day of Combating Desertification and Drought – June 17, 2026 🌱
Today, June 17, 2026, we join the global community in commemorating the International Day of Combating Desertification and Drought, a day dedicated to raising awareness about land degradation, desertification, and the urgent need for sustainable environmental practices.
In line with this year's commemoration, we reflect on the Environmental Awareness Campaign and Advocacy Program held on June 17, 2026, at the NYSC Local Government Secretariat, Lafia, Nasarawa State. The event equipped corps members with practical knowledge on tree nursery establishment, seedling management, and the vital role of afforestation in combating climate change and environmental degradation.
Resource person Mr. Christopher Ashe Bashayi demonstrated the processes involved in preparing nursery beds, treating soil, sourcing quality seeds, and nurturing saplings for successful transplantation. Corps members also participated in practical sessions involving the planting of mango, cashew, pear, coconut, and pride of Barbados seeds.
Also speaking at the event, Architect David highlighted the growing impact of climate change on rainfall patterns and encouraged everyone to plant trees in their communities as a lasting investment in environmental sustainability and future generations.
As we mark this important day, let us all commit to restoring degraded lands, planting more trees, conserving our environment, and taking meaningful action against desertification and drought.
