What does volunteerism look like across borders?

For Elisabeth Mäkiö, it means bringing Finnish perspectives to Nigeria and supporting impactful work with UNODC Nigeria

From youth engagement through the SADA Football Cup, to strengthening coordination for peace and development.

She says community service, humor and kindness are powerful forces, not only in life, but also in development work.

In Northeast Nigeria, Adamu Hamman is showing what it means to serve.

As a UN Volunteer with UNFPA Nigeria, he supports communities through GBV awareness, access to essential SRH services, reaching 100,000+ women, girls, and vulnerable individuals.

Despite challenges, he keeps showing up because one conversation, one referral, one life reached can make a difference.
He says volunteering is about showing up with empathy and courage.

On the ground, he:
• Supported irrigation farming, creating new livelihood opportunities
• Rehabilitated roads to reconnect communities
• Led community engagement and direct support
• Ensured fair land allocation, prioritizing the most vulnerable

Through his work, families began to rebuild, and communities felt seen, supported, and not abandoned.
