Earth Day 2026: “Our Power, Our Planet” — NES FCT Chapter Leads Tree Planting Drive for a Greener Future
April 22, 2026
Venue: Anglican Comprehensive Secondary School (ACSS), Kpeyegyi, Kurudu–Karshi Road, FCT,Abuja.
The Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), FCT Chapter, joined the global community to celebrate Mother Earth Day 2026 under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” The event emphasized the collective responsibility of humanity in protecting and restoring the environment through sustainable actions.
Notably present was the National President of NES, Dr. Lympson Efegbidiki Okobia, who delivered a profound address highlighting how human activities directly impact the planet and how tree planting remains one of the most effective ways to heal the Earth.
The NES FCT Chapter Chairman, Tpl. Olushola Leke, used a striking analogy—likening environmental neglect to deliberately opening one’s roof and expecting no consequences—to illustrate the urgency of caring for the “bleeding Earth.” He admonished all attendees to be environmentally conscious, especially in respect to Mother Earth Day, and to take deliberate steps toward preservation.
The 2026 Committee Chairman, Dr. Sam Opeyemi Ayadi, further emphasized the importance of environmental consciousness, urging all stakeholders to act responsibly and consistently as stewards of Mother Earth.
The President, Dr. Fatima Kachalla, of the Association of Flower Nursery and Landscape Practitioners of Abuja(AFNALPA), a key partner in the event, underscored the importance of trees in mitigating climate change and restoring ecological balance. She advocated that for every tree cut down, ten should be planted to sustain the planet’s health.
Among the dignitaries was His Lordship, Rt. Rev’d Gershinen Paul Dajur, Ph.D., of the Anglican Bishop of the Keffi-Karshi Missionary Diocese, who commended NES for choosing the school environment as the venue and expressed readiness for future collaborations on environmental initiatives. The Principal of ACSS, Ven. Olusegun Adesokan, pledged that the 100 seedlings planted would be nurtured by students as part of their environmental education. He further encouraged all present to become environmental stewards, taking responsibility for protecting and sustaining the Earth.
Representing the United Nations, Dr. Bolanle Olumekun reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to environmental protection and shared ongoing global efforts to care for Mother Earth.
The event witnessed active participation from students, teachers, community leaders, NGOs, NES members, and environmental enthusiasts, all contributing to the planting of 100 seedlings. Each tree was marked with a nameplate bearing the date and the name of the planter, symbolizing a shared pledge to protect the environment for future generations.
The 2026 Earth Day celebration stands as a powerful reminder that our collective power can indeed heal our planet.
