Celebrating 2026 United Nations World Indigenous Peoples Day

Heritage, Culture and Identity in the FCT 🇳🇬
It was a privilege to participate in the commemoration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, organised by the United Nations and hosted at the University of Abuja.
The event provided a powerful platform to celebrate the rich cultural heritage, identity, traditions and resilience of the nine indigenous tribes of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)—
Amwamwa,
Bassa,
Egbira/Egbura-Koto,
Gade,
Ganagana,
Gbagyi,
Gbari,
Gwandara
and
Koro.
Through traditional dances, music, cultural attire and other captivating displays, each community brought its unique identity to life, while collectively demonstrating the beautiful cultural tapestry that makes the FCT unique.
For BEF, committed to education, inclusion, community development and the empowerment of underserved indigenous communities, this occasion was more than a celebration. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving indigenous languages, traditions, values and cultural knowledge for present and future generations.
Culture is not merely something we inherit from the past; it is a legacy we have a responsibility to protect, preserve and pass on.
The beautiful cultural performances captured in this video are a celebration of identity, heritage and the enduring spirit of the Original Inhabitants of the FCT.
Nine tribes. Diverse cultures. One heritage. One people.
