Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) play a critical role in supporting survivors of sexual violence in Nigeria. They provide safe, confidential spaces where individuals can access medical care, psychosocial support, and legal guidance all in one place.

These centres are designed to ensure that survivors are not alone, and that help is available when it’s needed most.

Awareness is powerful. The more people understand what SARCs offer, the more lives can be supported, protected, and empowered.

Refined Hearts Foundation was proud to participate in the Borno State Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) Steering Committee Meeting.

The conversation was focused, honest, and necessary.

Key highlights included:

• A review of the 2025 performance of Maiduguri and Biu SARCs looking closely at conviction rates and access to medical services
• Critical discussions on forensic gaps, including limited DNA testing capacity and challenges with evidence storage following the 2024 flood recovery
• Strategic review of the 2026 Terms of Reference, with a strong push toward State Government ownership and sustainable, survivor-centered justice systems
• Early planning for the 2026 SGBV Awareness Campaign

What does this mean?

It means progress but also a clear reminder that more needs to be done.

Strengthening systems, improving access to justice, and ensuring survivors receive the support they deserve requires continuous collaboration and commitment.
