🌍 WORLD ZOONOSES DAY 2026

Today, Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Initiative (VAWI) joins the global community in commemorating World Zoonoses Day 2026 under the theme:

🩺 One Health, One Future: Animal Health Is Public Health

More than 60% of emerging infectious diseases in humans originate from animals. Protecting animal health and welfare is therefore essential for safeguarding human health, food security, and environmental sustainability.

Together, let us strengthen the One Health approach through responsible animal care, disease prevention, surveillance, and collaboration across sectors.

🐄🐐 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗶 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲

The Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Initiative (𝗩𝗔𝗪𝗜) successfully carried out the Humane Livestock Transport Awareness Campaign on 28th June 2026 at the two Durum Livestock Markets in Bauchi State—the Large Ruminant Livestock Market and the Small Ruminant Livestock Market.

📌 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

The campaign engaged livestock traders, transporters, handlers, and other market stakeholders on practical measures to improve animal welfare during transportation. Key topics discussed included humane handling, transporting only animals that are fit for loading and travel, proper loading and unloading techniques, avoiding overcrowding, ensuring adequate ventilation, and providing water and rest during long journeys.

📌 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗢𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲

By promoting practical and low-cost welfare improvements, this initiative seeks to reduce animal stress, injuries, and suffering while enhancing livestock productivity and supporting sustainable livelihoods.

📌 𝗔𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

This project was generously funded by The Pollination Project Foundation, whose support is helping to advance farm animal welfare and promote humane livestock management practices within local communities.

THE HIDDEN COST OF THE ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE.

The illegal wildlife trade is one of the most lucrative criminal industries in the world, worth billions of dollars annually. But behind the profits lies unimaginable suffering and loss.

🦜 Millions of wild animals are trapped, trafficked, and sold each year.
🐘 Many die from stress, injury, or starvation before reaching their destination.
🐍 Those who survive are often kept in cruel conditions — starved, mutilated, or exploited for entertainment or luxury products.
This trade is not only an animal welfare tragedy — it’s also driving species extinction, destabilizing ecosystems, and increasing the risk of zoonotic disease outbreaks.

At Veterinarians for Animal Welfare (VAW), we believe every animal deserves freedom and dignity. We are raising awareness, promoting stronger laws, and empowering veterinarians to take action against this silent crisis.

This future is possible, but only if we act now. Ending wildlife trafficking requires collaboration between veterinarians, law enforcement, policymakers, and communities. By strengthening rescue and rehabilitation systems, supporting public awareness, and enforcing wildlife protection laws, we can stop the suffering before it starts.

🩺 VETERINARIANS SHOULD BE PART OF HUMANITARIAN SERVICES 🌍

When disasters strike — floods, droughts, earthquakes, or wildfires, humanitarian efforts rightly focus on saving human lives. But too often, one group of victims is forgotten: animals.
🐄 Livestock that provide food and income for families.
🐕 Pets that offer emotional support and companionship.
🐘 Wildlife that sustain ecosystems already under pressure.

Animals suffer the same floods, droughts, and hunger, yet their rescue, treatment, and welfare are rarely part of official emergency responses.
This gap matters. When animals perish or are left untreated, communities lose their livelihoods, food security collapses, and diseases can spread more easily.
👉 At Veterinarians for Animal Welfare (VAW), we are advocating to fill this gap, by ensuring that veterinarians are recognized as essential members of humanitarian response teams.
Our work focuses on:

WHY CAT WELFARE MATTERS
