WHY THE TAROK NATION MUST NOT KEEP SILENT ABOUT AIG ABEL J. Z. MIRI, MSPSP

There comes a time in the life of every people when silence becomes an injustice. There comes a moment when failing to acknowledge exceptional service risks allowing important chapters of our history to fade into obscurity.

For the Tarok Nation, that moment is now.

For years, one of our distinguished sons has continued to serve quietly—using his position, influence, experience, time, and personal resources to support people, create opportunities, open doors, and give hope to those in need. He has done much of this without seeking publicity, applause, or recognition.

That son is Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Abel J. Z. Miri, MSPSP (Member, Society of Peace and Security Practitioners).

His story deserves to be documented and his contributions deserve to be acknowledged—not because he has demanded recognition, but precisely because his example demonstrates what selfless leadership and genuine public service should look like.

This is not a political endorsement, nor is it an attempt to place one individual above others. AIG Abel J. Z. Miri is a professional public servant, not a politician. This is simply a call to preserve the truth, recognise service, and celebrate a son whose journey has positively impacted many lives.
A LEGACY OF QUIET SERVICE
Since 2003, AIG Abel J. Z. Miri, MSPSP has consistently demonstrated a commitment to developing people and creating opportunities for deserving Nigerians.

At a time when public positions are sometimes viewed primarily as avenues for personal advantage, he has demonstrated a different philosophy: that influence is most valuable when it is used to lift others.
His humanitarian contributions became particularly evident during his service as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Recruitment Officer in the Taraba State Police Command, where he played a significant role in supporting young people seeking opportunities to serve.

*Government Ratification:*

Once the kingmakers select the ruler, the decision is forwarded to the Plateau State Government, which officially confirms the selection and presents the Staff of Office to the new monarch.

"The Langtang Generals"The traditional election process became heavily complicated in recent decades due to overlapping court disputes and political rivalries.

*The Military Elite Influence:*

Langtang is famous for producing high-ranking Nigerian military officers (often called the Langtang Mafia or Langtang Generals). This elite influence deeply impacted the stool's succession. The General Domkat Bali Controversy: Following the passing of Ponzhi Tarok Edward Cinnim in 2008, the former Minister of Defence, General Domkat Bali, was selected as the Ponzhi Tarok Designate in 2010. However, legal battles regarding whether a retired military officer could bypass specific traditional rites tied up the stool in court for years, preventing his official coronation before his death.

*Active Legal Bottlenecks* :

The primary reason a new king has not been elected is an unresolved case pending before the Supreme Court of Nigeria (Mr. Clement Cirman & Ors vs. Executive Governor of Plateau State). Tarok legal stakeholders are actively appealing to the Chief Justice of Nigeria to expedite this hearing to clear the path for a new traditional election.

3. *Current Outlook*

The state administration under Governor Caleb Mutfwang has publicly pledged to work closely with the Langtang Joint Traditional Council to resolve the legal hurdles and formally install a new Ponzhi Tarok as soon as the courts allow.

*The TAROK Nation*

The paramount ruler of the Tarok people of Plateau State, Nigeria, is traditional known by the title Ponzhi Tarok.

The visual references below showcase the traditional regalia of the Tarok kingship and leadership, which heavily features leopard skins, specialized beaded headdresses, and cultural artifacts symbolizing authority.

*Key Aspects of the Tarok Monarchy*

The Royal Seat: The palace of the Ponzhi Tarok is located in Langtang, the cultural and political capital of the Tarok nation.

*Symbol of Authority:*

Traditional dress for the ruler frequently utilizes leopard prints and skins to signal power, bravery, and fierce independence, alongside specific staff pieces.

The selection and election process of the Ponzhi Tarok (the king of the Tarok people) is deeply rooted in ancient clan-based systems, but it has become a subject of intense modern legal and political interest.

The throne remains vacant, and the Joint Traditional Council is led on an interim basis by the *Ponzhi Zinni, HRH Nimnan Langnim.* The vacant seat has sparked peaceful youth protests and legal appeals calling for a resolution.

1. *The Traditional Election Process*

Historically, the Ponzhi Tarok is not chosen through a general public vote, but rather through a sacred council of kingmakers.

*The 12 Ancestral Clans:*

The Tarok nation is comprised of 12 distinct clans namely :-

Shamot clan
Piga clan
Mwal clan
Gwan clan
Wang clan
Laka clan
Binding clan
Jat clan
Gbak clan
Singha clan
Langit clan
Yinkur clan
The leadership structure traditionally relies on these familial lines to present eligible candidates.

*The Kingmakers Council* :

When a king passes away, the representatives from specific ruling lineages form the kingmakers' college. They consult traditional oracle systems, deliberate on the character and lineage of the nominees, and vote on the successor.

I stand to be corrected

In the traditional religion of the Taroh (Tarok) people of Plateau State, Nigeria, the collective ancestral spirits are referred to as Orim, and are revered through a strictly guarded male-dominated ritual cult. The Tarok people consider their ancestors to be "glorified fathers" who protect, guide, and enforce social order within the community. The Ancestral Concept: Orim vs. Ùrìmùrìm: The singular term used to refer to a single deceased individual or one specific ancestor. orìm: The collective term for all ancestors, as well as the name of the spiritual cult itself. The Living Dead: The orim inhabit the land of the dead, keeping them in direct contact with all deceased members of the tribe, including children. The Ritual Space: The Sacred Grove (Ibang) The Location: Every sizeable Taroh settlement maintains a hidden, conserved sacred grove outside the village boundaries. The Shrines: Within these groves, families and clans build a shrine or altar called an Ibang specifically for ancestral veneration. Access Restrictions: Only initiated adult males (usually 18 years and older) and post-menopausal women are permitted to enter these groves to interact with the orim. Core Ritual Practices and Manifestations The Masquerade: The orim manifest physically to the community as masked figures or masquerades. The Sacred Language: When the masquerades emerge, they speak through voice-disguising instruments using an esoteric dialect filled with code words. Unmasked male interpreters then translate these messages into standard Taroh syntax for the audience. Sacrifices and Offerings: Initiates regularly pour libations and offer animal sacrifices at the Ibang. “These sacrifices are offered either to make the Orim happy with their followers or as a way of atoning for a wrong committed against them.”, as noted by APAS. Night Seclusion: On specific nights when the orim are active and "out" in the village, all women, children, and uninitiated individuals are strictly avoid to go out.

THE TAROK PEOPLE
The Taroh (or Tarok) people are an indigenous, fiercely independent ethnic group from the Middle Belt of Nigeria, primarily based in Plateau State. Renowned in Nigerian history for their deep-rooted farming heritage, profound bravery, and immense contributions to the Nigerian military, the Taroh are a proud people whose story is defined by resilience, unity, and a rich cultural identity. The Epic OriginsAccording to oral tradition, the early history of the Taroh is tied to a legendary figure and great warrior named Vonghro. Often depicted in folklore as a shepherd who commanded great elephants, Vonghro is said to have possessed supernatural abilities, such as commanding the rain and controlling the sun.The Taroh coalesced over centuries from a diverse mix of surrounding groups, including the Pe, Ngas, Jukun, and Tal. Driven by population growth and historical migrations, they eventually made their permanent home on the fertile plains and hilly landscapes of southeast Plateau State, establishing their ancestral headquarters at Gazum Hill in present-day Langtang North.A Legacy of Bravery and the MilitaryThe story of the Taroh is inextricably linked to the military. Often referred to locally as the "Home of Generals," Langtang (the heartland of the Taroh) has produced some of Nigeria's most celebrated and influential military officers and leaders. This tradition of martial excellence began to take shape during the First and Second World Wars when Taroh soldiers served in the colonial army. This bravery and disciplined nature allowed many Taroh officers to rise rapidly in the ranks of the Nigerian Armed Forces, making them vital figures in the socio-political evolution of the country.Culture and CommunityWhen exploring the story of a Taroh man, you find someone deeply tethered to his community:The Agrarian Roots: True to their heritage, the Taroh are traditionally hardworking farmers, cultivating crops such as yams, millet, and maize. The Ancestral Sprit

The Effects of Ignoring Youth Demands for a First-Class Royal Chief in TAROK Nation

The youth are the backbone of every community. They are the strength, energy, and future of a nation. In TAROK Nation, where culture, tradition, and unity are deeply valued, the call by young people for the crowning of a royal first-class chief is not just an ordinary demand. It is a movement driven by identity, recognition, leadership, and the desire for progress.

When the voices of the youth are ignored, especially on matters that concern their heritage and future, the consequences can greatly affect peace, development, and unity in the community. Below are three major effects that may arise when the demands of the youth are not addressed.

1. Loss of Peace and Increase in Crisis

One of the greatest dangers of ignoring the youth is unrest within the community. Young people naturally expect their opinions and struggles to be heard by leaders and authorities. When peaceful protests and appeals are neglected, frustration begins to grow among the people.

This frustration can lead to:

Division among community members

Continuous protests and demonstrations

Conflict between youths and authorities

Breakdown of trust in leadership

A community without peace cannot experience development. Markets, schools, businesses, and social activities may suffer because instability discourages progress. Listening to the youth helps preserve harmony and unity in TAROK Nation.

2. Weakening of Cultural Identity and Traditional Authority

Traditional institutions are important symbols of identity, pride, and unity. The desire to crown a first-class chief reflects the people’s need for stronger representation and recognition of TAROK heritage.

If this demand is ignored:

Young people may feel their culture is undervalued

Respect for traditional leadership may decline

Future generations may lose interest in preserving TAROK customs and traditions

The community may feel politically and socially marginalized

A respected royal institution strengthens tribal solidarity and gives the people a stronger voice both locally and nationally. Ignoring such aspirations can create disappointment among youths who believe they are fighting for the honor and future of their nation.

3. Slow Development and Youth Disengagement

The youth are the engine of development in every society. They contribute through business, education, innovation, security, politics, and community service. However, when they feel neglected or rejected, many lose motivation to participate positively in community growth.

This can result in:

Reduced community participation

Increase in youth migration to other places

Rise in crime, drug abuse, or negative activities due to frustration

Lack of cooperation between leaders and young people

When leaders work together with the youth, communities grow stronger. But when the younger generation feels ignored, the spirit of patriotism and responsibility begins to fade.

Conclusion

The call for a first-class royal chief in TAROK Nation represents more than tradition; it represents unity, recognition, and the hopes of the younger generation. Every wise society listens to its youth because they carry the future of the nation on their shoulders.

For peace, unity, and progress to prevail in TAROK Nation, dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect between leaders and the youth are necessary. A community that values its youth secures a stronger and brighter future for generations to come.

A Call to Restore Peace and Unity Among TAROK Youth.

The Tarok people are known for strength, courage, culture, and unity. As proud sons and daughters of Langtang North, South and surrounding TAROK communities, the responsibility of protecting peace and preserving our heritage now rests heavily on the younger generation.

Today, more than ever, TAROK youth must rise above division, conflict, hatred, and political manipulation. Our future can only be secured through unity, understanding, and collective progress. No tribe grows through internal conflict; development comes when the people stand together with one voice and one purpose.

Three Important Points for This Wake-Up Call

1. Promote Peace Above Conflict
TAROK youth must reject violence, revenge, and unnecessary rivalry. Peace creates opportunities for education, business, leadership, and community development. A united people are stronger than a divided people.

2. Protect and Preserve TAROK Identity
Our language, culture, traditions, and values are our pride. Young people must promote TAROK culture with dignity and respect while teaching future generations the importance of unity and brotherhood.

3. Work Together for Progress and Development
Instead of fighting ourselves, TAROK youth should focus on empowerment, education, entrepreneurship, community leadership, and supporting one another. Together we can build stronger communities in Langtang North, Langtang South, and beyond.

Let us remember: peace is strength, unity is power, and progress is our collective responsibility. The future of the TAROK Nation depends on what today’s youth choose to build.

We Speak TAROK.
We Stand for Peace.
We Work for Progress.
God Bless the TAROK Nation.
