Happy Human Rights Day!

In commemoration of Human Rights Day 2025, we’re reminded that children are not just the future - they are humans today, with rights that must be protected and upheld.

At Create that Change Development Initiative, we champion the rights and well-being of children, ensuring their dignity and needs are prioritized, especially within the school environment.

Through the ‘Public-School Revival Initiative’ (PSRI), we are working to provide children with the dignity of functional toilets and the joy of a safe, well-equipped library - a place to learn, dream, and explore new adventures.
Today, and every day, let’s remember the children.

Today, the CCDI team carried out monitoring and evaluation visits to four of the schools supported under our Start Smart September 2024 – Enhancing Nutrition, Exercise and Reading Initiative (ENERI) and our newest program, The Public-School Revival Initiative (PSRI).

Here’s some of what we learnt:
Improved Sanitation: In one of the schools we visited, open defecation has drastically reduced following the construction of new toilets.

Girls shared that they now feel safer and no longer have to miss school due to the lack of a dignified place to ease themselves.

We also learnt from the Assistant Head Teacher that over 100 new pupils have enrolled since October, a growth we believe our interventions helped influence.

Health & Exercise: In another school, pupils are still actively using the ENERI exercise equipment provided.

They did, however, request more footballs to support their sports activities.

Reading & Learning: When asked about the library, one pupil said he enjoys reading about travel, adventures, and animals. Another suggested that having a fan, comfortable chair, and a computer would make the library even better.

We also observed a major challenge: the reading levels of many pupils remain far below their age-appropriate standards. As we’ve highlighted before, far too many children in the schools we support are still unable to read confidently.

In 2026, we are committed to scaling up interventions that will directly address this learning gap and help children build strong reading skills.

These are just a few highlights from the feedback we’ve received so far.

While it’s encouraging to see the impact of our interventions, the needs are still great.

As the saying goes: “To whom much is given, much will be required.”

We are committed to doing more - and we invite you to partner with us as we continue creating safer, healthier, and more inspiring learning environments for children in public schools.

Will you join us?

Today, with the support of a generous donor who identified and sponsored three additional children back to school, at LEA Nomadic Primary School Dutsen Garki Abuja, through CCDI's Start Smart September Initiative 2025, our total number of beneficiaries has increased to 54!

You too can partner with us to reduce the number of out-of-school children and help return them to the classroom.

Basic education is not a privilege; it is every child’s right.

Children are the glimpse of tomorrow—yet their future is at risk when basic rights are denied.

CCDI is stepping up: safe water, functional toilets, furnished libraries, and school feeding to protect health, dignity & safety.
Join us in safeguarding their rights!

As part of our Public Schools Revival Initiative, CCDI is not only improving facilities, we’re also promoting healthy behavioral change among our dear public-school children.

Today, in celebration of World Toilet Day, we’re excited to share a fun and catchy tune created to help children build better hygiene habits.

Enjoy Our Toilet Song!

The Grande Finale…but we are just getting started!
Today, Create that Change Development Initiative (CCDI), in partnership with the Swiss Embassy in Nigeria, commissioned a new 8-stall toilet facility and a refurbished library at LEA Primary School, Sheretti, Abuja.
The project marks the completion of the first phase of CCDI’s Public-School Revival Initiative (PSRI) — an ambitious effort to improve hygiene standards, restore dignity, and promote inclusive learning environments in public primary schools across the Federal Capital Territory.
Under this first phase, CCDI successfully implemented several school infrastructure upgrades, including:
• Construction of two 8-stall toilet facilities at LEA Primary School, Kabusa and LEA Nomadic Primary School, Apo Dutsen.
• Refurbishment and equipping of libraries at LEA Primary School Phase III and LEA Pilot Science Primary School, both in Gwagwalada.
• Major renovation of a 12-stall toilet block at LEA Primary School Phase III, Gwagwalada.
• Completion of an 8-stall toilet facility and refurbishment and equipping of a library at LEA Primary School, Sheretti.
“Access to clean toilets is a basic right, not a luxury,” said Mrs. Sharon Ayeni, Executive Director of CCDI. “Libraries open doors to knowledge and brighter futures. We are deeply grateful to Mr. Siamak Rouhani, Deputy Head of Mission at the Swiss Embassy, and to the Embassy for their steadfast partnership in uplifting schools that need it most.”
The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) agenda and supports national efforts to improve health, dignity, and learning outcomes for children in underserved communities.
As CCDI looks ahead to future phases of the Public-School Revival Initiative, the organisation is calling on development partners, the private sector, and well-meaning individuals to join hands in expanding this transformative work to more public schools within the FCT and beyond.

Hunger is a world problem, and at different levels, its impact is felt.
According to Research by Laurie Miller of Heifer International, children's brain growth is poor where malnutrition is prevalent. She said, "Proper nutrition is important to development because if you're lacking calories and micronutrients, you're not curious, and if you're not curious, you're not learning."

We at CCDI believe that hunger affects students' ability to concentrate in school, making it hard to retain information and perform well. We are calling on the government to relaunch the Renewed Hope: Nigerian Home Grown School Feeding Program today.
