Work continues on our response to the cholera outbreak in Maiduguri, Borno State. In order to mitigate and contain the spread of cholera, together with JDPI Maiduguri, CRS, through the INTO-MAMI project, distributed cholera kits to affected families and those living within a 50-meter radius of reported cases. Each distribution was paired with clear, practical guidance on how to use the items safely and effectively.

Beyond the kits, trained hygiene promoters went door to door, sharing life-saving information on cholera prevention. Families learned simple but critical practices such as proper handwashing, safe water handling, environmental sanitation, and the importance of seeking care early.

So far, 648 people have been reached with these essential messages, helping communities protect themselves and stop the spread.

Well done to the team for a successfull flag-off and net distribution! Children are strong agents of change and involving them in the malaria elimination journey earlier on is a laudable innovation worth replicating.

In Kaduna and Yobe states, our community volunteers on the Core Group Partners Project are playing a vital role in ensuring that mothers and newborns receive essential care when they need it most. Moving from household to household, these trusted volunteers identify pregnant women, provide timely health information, and support families to access nearby services.

Through their sustained engagement, 1,028 pregnant women were tracked in May, and 844 were successfully reconnected to antenatal and immunization services, helping to reduce risks during pregnancy and childbirth.

Volunteers also worked closely with families to protect newborns from preventable diseases, supporting the vaccination of 615 newborns with the Oral Polio Vaccine.

By building trust, sharing lifesaving information, and linking families to care, community volunteers continue to serve as a critical bridge between households and the health system, helping every mother and child get a healthier start to life.

JDPI Maiduguri and CRS collaborate on Cholera response in Jere LGA, Borno State

Cholera cases began to emerge in Borno State in early May 2026, with the first suspected cases reported in Shehuri South, Maiduguri. Within days, the outbreak was confirmed and quickly escalated in a setting already affected by prolonged conflict, displacement, and limited access to safe water and sanitation.

In response, CRS partnered with JDPI to strengthen community-led action. A refresher training equipped 20 members of the Case Area Targeted Intervention (CATI) teams with practical skills in household disinfection and disease surveillance to help contain the spread and protect vulnerable families.

Since then, CATI teams have taken action on the ground. In June alone, they disinfected 101 households, 33 latrines, and 6 water points in Simari. They also identified and referred suspected cholera cases during community surveillance activities in Jere LGA.

Together with communities, CRS continues to support faster response, safer environments, and stronger local systems to stop the spread of cholera.

Osun State is piloting an innovative school-based distribution of insecticide-treated nets across 29 government schools, with training underway to help teachers guide students on proper net use.

Speaking at the launch in Osogbo, the state capital, CRS Project Officer for the Global Fund Malaria Grant, Maureen Okoro, said, "Students are agents of change in our family and in our community. We're looking at a situation where a child can interpret the need and importance of using a treated net at home."

In May, our team in Nigeria joined other global CRS colleagues, partners, and innovators at the ICT4D Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, to explore how digital solutions can drive more effective, inclusive, and accountable development.

Founded in 2010 by CRS, the ICT4D Conference has grown into a vibrant international gathering of NGOs, local organizations, governments, donors, researchers, and private sector partners, all committed to driving technology for good.

It was a valuable space to reflect, learn, and share how technology can strengthen impact across communities. Three key takeaways stood out for our work:

โœ… ICT4D systems should be designed to integrate seamlessly to reduce duplication and improve real-time data flow.

โœ…Strong safeguards around data privacy, security, and ethical use must be built into systems from the design stage.

โœ… Digital tools must be simple, field-ready, and co-designed with end users to ensure usability, especially in low-resource settings.

As we continue to support communities across Nigeria, these insights reinforce our commitment to designing solutions that are practical, secure, and driven by the people we serve.

Training caregivers on the use of Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) remains a critical intervention in reducing child malnutrition and preventing avoidable deaths.

On 4 May 2026, the INTO-MAMI Project commenced Phase IV screening, referral, and MAMA MUAC caregiver training across Muna Moforo and Simari communities in Jere LGA, as well as Kwami and Goni Awanari communities in Magumeri LGA.

Through practical sessions on screenings, mothers and caregivers learned how to detect malnutrition early using the Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tape. This included practical guidance on how to measure, identify risks, and take action before it is too late.

The MUAC tape is a simple, color-coded tool that helps families easily check their children's weight for malnutrition. By equipping caregivers with the right knowledge, this intervention is a sustainable community-led approach for fighting child malnutrition.
