Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Olanike Balogun has etched her name in history as the first female pilot in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), marking a milestone in resilience and redefining boundaries in aviation.
Hailing from Kaduna and rooted in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, Balogun’s remarkable journey began in 2002 when she joined the NCS as a Customs Assistant and cabin crew member for its Airwing Unit. Over the years, her unwavering determination transformed her role from a flight attendant to a licensed pilot, setting a precedent in a predominantly male-dominated field.
Reflecting on her journey in a recent interview, Balogun credited her perseverance and the NCS’s support for her achievements. “It wasn’t easy staying in the Service while many of my colleagues pursued higher-paying airline jobs. But my passion for public service and my dream of becoming a pilot kept me steadfast,” she said.
Balogun’s academic and professional accomplishments include an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, and a Pilot Certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida, funded by the NCS.
Now serving as a pioneer in the NCS Airwing, Balogun sees her achievement as a beacon of inspiration. “Becoming the first female pilot in the Service is not just a personal milestone; it reflects the endless possibilities for women to excel in any field. I hope my story motivates others to chase their dreams relentlessly,” she stated.
The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, lauded Balogun’s accomplishments, highlighting her dedication as an example of how institutional support and determination can lead to groundbreaking achievements. “Her journey is a testament to the Service’s investment in capacity building and innovation,” Adeniyi remarked.
Balogun continues to inspire a new generation of dreamers, particularly young Nigerians and women, by proving that the skies are not the limit—they are just the beginning.
