Every year on August 19, the world comes together to honor aid workers who risk their lives to support people in crisis. It is also a moment to reflect on the urgent need to protect civilians affected by conflict, disasters, and climate shocks.
For Women in Humanitarian Response in Nigeria Initiative (WIHRINI), this day carries a special meaning. Our work is rooted in the belief that humanitarian action must be inclusive, gender-responsive, and community-driven. From strengthening disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in Adamawa, to empowering women-led initiatives in humanitarian response, we continue to stand with communities on the frontline of multiple crises.
This year’s theme highlights the resilience and courage of those who bring hope where despair appears strongest. At WIHRINI, we:
• Recognize the dedication of women and men responding to emergencies across Nigeria and beyond.
• Reaffirm our commitment to amplifying women’s voices in humanitarian decision-making.
• Advocate for safer, more equitable, and more sustainable humanitarian action.
• Stand in solidarity with affected communities, ensuring no one is left behind.
On this World Humanitarian Day, we celebrate all humanitarians and recommit ourselves to a future where compassion and justice guide response efforts. Together, we can build systems that protect lives, restore dignity, and strengthen resilience.
