At Madiba Foundation, we were honoured to be part of the celebration of Dr. Chido Onumah (Uncle Chido) at 60, a milestone that reflects a lifetime of courage, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to nation-building.

The symposium/dinner, convened under the guidance of Dapo Olorunyomi (Chief Host), brought together some of Nigeria’s most respected voices. We were privileged to witness the presence of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu (National Security Adviser) as Special Guest of Honour, with Dr Kayode Fayemi chairing the occasion, and a thought-provoking keynote by Prof Yakubu Ochefu.

Anchored on the theme “Formation or Nation-Building: Nigeria’s Troubled Quest for a Modern Federal Republic,” the symposium featured an intergenerational panel, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), Mr Samson Itodo, and Mr Ebenezer Wikina, moderated by Faridah Salihu-Lukman. The event was expertly hosted by Maupe Ogun-Yusuf.

As an organisation committed to strengthening democracy and advancing good governance, we are proud that our Executive Director, Olumide Fred’ Adetiba served on the planning committee and delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the committee.

Happy 60th, Uncle Chido. Your voice and legacy remain critical to shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.

Excerpt from Madiba Webinar 10.0

In this clip, Joshua Olufemi (Founder, Dataphyte) highlights the need to move away from systemic inefficiencies by strengthening institutional independence, legislative oversight, and citizen participation in policing.

He also emphasizes the importance of transparency — particularly in recruitment processes — to ensure public trust and accountability within the policing system.

Activating mechanisms like the Community Policing Committee, provided for by law but yet to be operationalized, could help create a channel for citizen feedback, complaints, and oversight.

“Policing works best when it is done with the consent of the people.”

In this clip, the discussion highlights the principle of policing by consent — where officers are not seen merely as a force, but as a service rooted within the communities they protect.

When police officers live among the people, understand local realities, and build relationships with communities, trust grows. This creates a system where the public and the police work together — a mutual responsibility that strengthens safety, accountability, and respect.

What role should community trust play in shaping the future of policing in Nigeria?

“Funding is also a form of control.”

In this clip, the speaker explains how funding structures can influence the independence and accountability of State Police institutions. The proposed model highlights the role of the House of Assembly in allocating funds while requiring the oversight board to periodically report, answer questions, and account for its actions.

Designing strong governance and accountability mechanisms will be essential to ensuring public trust in any State Police framework.

“Policing should be a service to the people — not a force over them.”

In this clip from Madiba Webinar 10.0, the importance of probity and institutional independence in establishing State Police is highlighted.

In a system vulnerable to corruption, strong oversight matters. An independent board, ratified by the legislature and insulated from political influence, could be key to ensuring accountability and public trust.

What safeguards should exist if State Police is implemented in Nigeria?
